Reversible Bulky Cowl and Cable Knit Sock Pattern with Detailed Instructions and Charts

Both Sides Cowl

This simple cowl is designed to use one skein of bulky yarn, approximately 100 yards and can be easily adapted for larger sizes by adding stitches in increments of 5 or going up a size in needles. It can be worn either side out and with careful weaving in of ends, be completely reversible. The sample was made with one skein of Madelinetosh Tosh Bulky in Terrarium on size 10 US double pointed /16" circular needles.

PURL SIDE Bind Off Row: k2 together, slip finished stitch back onto left needle and repeat until all stitches are bound off. Weave in ends along the knit stitches of the purl side. There is no right side or wrong side (unless your woven ends stick out). This sock pattern was my entry for Ravelympics 2010 Designer Dance Event. The central motif is a modification of Filey Pattern IX on page 32 of Gladys Thompson's Patterns for Jerseys, Guernseys and Arans, Dover Books, 1971. I used Enchanted Knoll Farm's Hoofgasm wool/cashmere/nylon (80/10/10) fingering weight yarn in colorway Cleopatra on size 1 (2.25mm) dp needles. Cast on 64 stitches and connect to work in the round (being careful, as they say, not to introduce a twist as you connect the stitches). At this point, Needle 1 holds the 32 instep stitches with 16 stitches each on Needle 2 and Needle3. CUFF K1, P1 for one inch.

Setup notes for leg: Start round at side of instep rather than center back of leg. Add one stitch at the end of the round to bring the stitch count to 65. HEEL

Heel set-up: (Slip 1, K1) 15 times, slip 1, K2 together. Turn work to wrong side, slip 1 purlwise and purl to end of row. You should now have 32 stitches for the instep and 32 for the heel. Continue Slip 1, K1 on the right side and the slip 1 purlwise, purl on the wrong side of the heel fap until you have 16 slip stitches on either edge of the flap, ending with a wrong side row. FOOT

Knit across the heel flap, pick up and knit 16 stitches along flap side, continue instep pattern where you left off, pick up 16 stitches on send fap side, and knit 9 more stitches. Place marker or simply divide the stitches among your needles so that the round now begins here at the center of the bottom of the foot. Round 1: knit to instep, continue in pattern, to end of instep, knit to end of round. Round 2: knit to 3 stitches before instep, K2tog, k1, continue instep pattern, K1, sk, knit to end of round. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have a total of 64 stitches, 32 on the instep, 32 (16 and 16 if you're using 3 double pointed needles) on the bottom of the foot. Continue in pattern until approximately 2 inches to desired length of foot. For the example US size 7.5-8 sock shown above, there are 3 full cables and a half cable at each end, ending on row 1 (no cable).
