I think it goes without saying that the June 2014 MAL was the most challenging to date. Because the pattern designs (except for Design A) did not repeat, the charts were a little more difficult to follow. HandmadeLove (HL) worked her usual magic and provided better charts for the knitters. Design B, Paisley, was by far the most popular choice for knitters. But, again, because there were no repeats, HL took the time to write out row-by-row instructuons, which I am including below. She also redid charts for everyone so they were easier to read. Some found it handy to mark lines every 1o" stitch, and place markers accordingly to keep their place. One brillaint knitter had the great idea to have her chart blown up, poster size. She mounted it on the wall. I kinda want one of those! (See colorfulspinner's pic below). Summer is a busy month, and, although many signed up for this project, few actually finished. Time gets in the way. Some put the pillows on hold and decided to catch up other WIPs before finishing the pillow. At least one knitter turned her piece into a lovely tote bag in lieu of a pillow (see cpainter's pics below). Thank you to everyone who stuck to it and saw this project through to the end. Your pillows, totes and the extras you added (Fran's fringe, Cynthia's cables, Pat's buttons, Charlotte's lining and handles) thrill me. And, HL, you amaze all of us. Thank you!

Design A Four-Color Patchwork

You have some flexibility with this design. You may choose how many squares you want to knit for your pillow or bag front. The squares work up to about 2” each. I am doing 6x6 (36 squares) for a 12” square pillow front. You can decide how big to make yours. You need 4 colors of fingering-weight yarns and 5 #3 DPNs. Instructions: CO 8 sts with one of the colors. Row 1: K across. Turn. Row 2: Purl back. Row 3: K2. Add second color, K4, pick up first color, K2. Turn. Row 4.P2 with first color, Purl 4 with second color, P2 with first color. Turn. Rows 5 & 6: Repeat rows 3 and 4. Turn. Rows 7 & 8: Repeat rows 1 &2 Row 8: Add third color, K1M1 in first st, K row (9 sts). Turn work 90 degrees and, using another DPN, pick up and K 9 sts down the side(You will have to K1M1 at least once). degrees and, using a third DPN, K1M1 in first st, continue to knit 9 sts across sing 4h DPN, K1M1 in first st and pick up and knit 7 more stup side for 9 sts. \*Turn work. K1M1 in first st. Work across row (10 sts).Work from \* around 3 more times. \*Turn work, using fourth color. K1M1 in first st. Work across (11 sts). Work from \* around 3 more times. \*Turn work. K1M1 in first st. Work across row (12sts). Work from \* around 3 more times. BO off all around, taking care to keep sts relatively loose and even. Tie ends on back. Set aside. Rotate colors so you have each color in each color position in the squares. 9 of each for a 6x6 pillow.16 of each for an 8x8 pillow. Arrange squares in pattern. Join squares by sewing or crocheting them together on the back. Then join rows together. Attach to a fabric bag, or knit a back and line. Finishing Instructions: Flat, Only One Side Made For a Pillow - Attach to a pillow form or add the backing of your choice, insert a pillow form or stuffing, and sew closed or add a zipper. For a Bag - Attach to a pre-made fabric bag or add a fabric back, line to prevent snagging on the floats and attach handles. Front and Back Made For a Pillow -Insert a pillow form or stuffing. Sew closed or add a zipper. For a Bag - Sew the front and back together, leaving one side open. Make a lining to prevent snagging on the floats and attach handles.

General Instructions For designs B, C, and D

You may choose to work your design in one of three ways: 1.- You can work it as one flat piece, meaning you will be stranding a knit row, turning and stranding a purl row. 2. - You can work a front and a back at the same time, in the round. ng it so you can work in the round, and then open it to be flat after you finish.

Remember LEO when stranding: float LOOSELY, EVENLY, and OFTE

If working the front flat, follow the chart back and forth, first and every other round from right to left and second and every second row thereafter from left to right. If working two sides, knit the first row of the chart, place a marker, and work your choice of design for the back. Suggestions for the back are to knit chart again, knit the chart again reversing the colors, or knit stripes of desired widths by alternating the colors. If steeking, knit 4 steek stitches (see note), follow chart, place marker, knit 4 more steek stitches, and place another marker. Repeat with next round, reading all rounds from right to left. Note: Steek stitches indicate where you will cut the fabric when you are done knitting. To make steek stitches knit 4 stitches alternating the yarn colors. (1 Color A, 1 Color B, 1 Color A, 1 Color B) When you finish the chart, bind off all the stitches loosely, taking care to keep the stitches even. Finishing Instructions Flat, Only One Side Made For a Pillow - Attach to a pillow form or add the backing of your choice, insert a pillow form or stuffing, and sew closed or add a zipper. For a Bag - Attach to a pre-made fabric bag or add a fabric back, line to prevent snagging on the floats and attach handles. Front and Back Made For a Pillow - Insert a pillow form or stuffing. Sew closed or add a zipper. For a Bag - Make a lining to prevent snagging on the floats and attach handles.

CHART for Design C (Plaid)

\*Some found it helpful to mark every 10" stitch and row and place corresponding markers in work

Pattern illustration

You may choose to work Plaid one of three ways: 1.-You can work it as one flat piece, meaning you willbe stranding a row, turning and stranding a purl a row. 2. -- You can work a front and a back at the same time, in the round. 3. - You can do just a front, steek it so you can work in the round, and open it to be flat after you finish. Instructions: For front only, CO 128 sts with one of the colors. For double-sided piece, CO 256sts. If steeking, CO 128 plus 4 steek sts, place marker, 4 more steek sts, 136 sts. NOTE: Ignore the 3 vertical lavender stripes. You will add these at the end. If working the front flat, follow the chart back and forth, first and every other round from right to left and second and every second row thereafter from left to right. If steeking, K4 steeksts, follow chart, k4 more steek sts, plass marker. Repeat with next round, reading all rounds from right to left. If working two sides, Knit first 128sts, place marker and work the remaining 128 sts, reversing colors for the back, if desired. BO off all around, taking care to keep sts relatively loose and even. With crochet hook, crochet on the 3 vertical stripes per chart. Or duplicate stitch them with a tapestry needle,if preferred. Attach to a fabric bag, or knit a back and line. Add handles. For pillow, attach to a pillow form or stuff and back with fabric or backing of choice(if you only knitted a front). You need 3 colors of fingering-weight yarns. #3 circ needle, length depends on number of sts you choose to use.
