Gumnut Babies and designed for Neo Blythe Dolls - head diameter 10.5" / 27cm. Pattern designed for a chunky hand-spun yarn of 7-8wPI The yarn used is a wool alpaca blend approx. 60% undyed, naturally coloured corriedale sheep wool, 40% undyed naturally coloured alpaca. You need about 20 gr = 0.705479 oz yarn (the hat in the photos took 19gr) Set of DPNs 6mm / US 10 / UK 4 Or a Circ of same size if you like to work using‘Magic Loop’ method Gauge 12sts = 4" or 10cm

Cast on 33 sts, distribute evenly over 3 DPNs and, without twisting, join in the round working a p2tog using the first and last stitches - now you'll have 32sts. (this is my preferred method of joining in a round & avoiding a “bump’ at the start) Nut edge: Work 3 rounds purling every stitch Nut: next 6 rounds K every stitch Start dec Rnd 10: K6, K2tog around (28sts) K next 2 rounds Rnd 13: K5, K2tog around (24sts) K next 2 rounds Rnd 16: K4, K2tog around (20sts) K next round Rnd 18: K3, K2tog around (16sts) K next round Rnd 20: K2, K2tog around (12sts) K next round Rnd 22: K1, K2tog around (8sts) Nut top: Work 2 rounds (all K) on those 8 sts Rnd 25: K2tog around (4sts) (you might like to use the I Cord method from here) Rnd 26: K2tog twice then pull a loop of yarn through the 2 remaining sts and ...

Pulling that 1" 1oop through the last 2 sts. Stem: work a crochet chain (either with a hook or you can use your fingers) of about 6 chains. Cut off yarn leaving a bit of a ‘tail'. With a big needle neaten the other ‘tail' at the start of your knitting. hat to your doll - and restrain from making comments such as “Nuts for the Nutty'

Possible adaptations - not yet trailed! To make a more conventional hat shape (with a rounded top) work as set to Round 23 : (8sts) K2tog around (now4sts) Rnd 24: K2tog twice ... break off yarn and thread thru. Neaten all ends To make a Gnome Hat (more tapered & long) work 2 rounds plain between each decrease round until you've only 4sts and finish as above.
