Sunflower JCead Beanie

Inspired by Sunflower fields in Tuscany, subtle Cypress Pine trees emerge from an irregular rib stitch which forms tree trunks in the band of the Sunflower Head Beanie. The trees are created using an interlocking lace leaf stitch. The crown of the hat is a pretty sunflower created by the leaf stitch forming ten petals.

Stitch
The leaf and stalk pattern is formed starting with ten sets of nine stitches, plus 2 stitches which form the edge for sewing up. After the ribbed band is formed over the first 10 rows (using the smaller knitting needles), the leaf stitch repeats over 16 rows, increases from the centre of the leaf and decreases from the edges of the leaf. You move to the larger needles from row 11 - just knit onto the larger needles on at a time. Please read the stitch guide to ensure that the pattern is knitted as directed Jechniques and Cbbrevialions K1 - knit 1 P1 - purl 1 Repeat from \* across - the pattern is made of a set of stitches which starts at the\* symbol and continues along the row. End purl 2 or End knit 2 - the last two stitches on the row are not a repeat of the pattern across the rest of the row. YO - yarn over - wrap the yarn around the right needle. Before a knit stitch, this creates a new stitch by placing the yarn over the top of the right hand needle. Before a purl stitch this creates a new stitch by placing the yarn over the top of the right hand needle and then back round underneath - wrapping the yarn $360^{\circ}~\mathrm{\Omega}^{\prime}$ clockwise around the right hand needle. If the holes don't come out evenly spaced in the next row, please check your method. P2 tog- A purl stitch where you put the right needle through two loops at the same time, reducing two stitches to one. P3 tog - A purl stitch where you put the right needle through three loops at the same time, reducing three stitches to one. SKPo - slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. SK2P - slip 1, K2tog, Pass the slipped stitch over the K2tog.

Finishing Suggestions
Using a large needle, fix the base of the last stitch by threading a simple knot through the bottom of the stitch, then twice thread the wool through the loops left on the knitting needle, tighten, then stitch the bottom of the last stitch on the other side. It is important to join the bases of the two stitches together in order that the centre of your sunflower is circular, not an unflowerly spiral. After matching up the rows in the centre of the flower, I suggest you then stitch the seam of the hat using mattress stitch (picking up 2 ladders from each side alternately), ensuring that the pattern matches up on each side. This should create an invisible seam. If you have any questions or comments, you can contact me on nic@5ooyearvision.com.
