Using 5 mm needles cast on 42 (47) sts Work 16 (20) rows 1 x 1 rib Change to 6 mm needles Work 3 (4) repeats of stitch pattern Place sts on a spare needle or holder
Making up:
Replace sts onto $1\,6\,\mathsf{m m}$ needle each, hold with wrong sides together, work a 3 needle bind off using a contrast colour yarn. Sew up the sides using an invisible seam.
Options:
If you want the hat to be reversible then leave as is, otherwise you can: Attach pompoms at the top corners (if age appropriate) Fold the corners so they meet in the centre of the top seam and stitch down for a rounder shape. Attach knitted or crocheted toys or flowers

I designed this cowl in response to a Ravelry thread regarding scarf safety for children I realized what was needed was a soft, warm, cosy cowl with Velcro dots to keep it se
cure and
release easily if necessary. The stitch pattern makes the most of multicoloured yarn. Cowl: Directions for larger size appear in brackets. Using 5 mm needles cast on 35 (41) sts. Work 6 rows stst. Change to 6mm needles Work 6 (7) repeats of stitch pattern (work more or less here if you have a child to try this on) Change to 5 mm needles Work 6 rows sts Cast off loosely.

Sew Velcro dots as shown in the photo-4 at one end and 4 on the other side at the other end-now your cowl is truly reversible, showing either the squishy side or the cute smocked side.
