Nifty Floor Sweeper Cover

Notes: This pattern makes a snug fitting cover for a Swiffer brand floor sweeper size: 4 inches by 10 inches. You begin by casting on with a magic cast on or similar so there is no beginning seam, continue knitting around until you have knitted almost half of the cover, cast off half the stitches for the opening, knit a few rows back and forth, cast on stitches again and knit back and forth until almost the required length of the cover, join and begin knitting in the round again for an inch or so and finish by purl grafting the end closed. Crochet a chain of yarn for a tie closure and weave around the T shaped opening like a drawstring to tie the cover in place. Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton Ease worsted weight 50% cotton 50% acrylic (Partial skein). Needles: 1 US # 5 circular and 4 US #5 double pointed, crochet hook size H. Gage: 20 stitches by 28 rows equal 4 inches. Measurements: of cover are 4 wide inches by 9 long inches. With a circular needle and both ends held together, using the cast-on of your choice (magic cast-on, figure 8 cast-on etc.) cast on 20 stitches each needle. Using magic loop with the circular needle or 3 double pointed needles (7-7-6 sts on each dbl pointed needle if you use them), begin knitting in the round. The beginning and ending of the round will be on the side of the cover. Row 1 - knit 20 sts then k1, p1 for 20 sts for the seed st pattern on the floor side of the cover. Row 2 - knit 20 sts then p1, k1 for 20 sts. Repeat rows 1 and 2 as directed for 4 12 inches. Next row bind off 18 sts, knit 22 sts in pattern, turn and knit back across the row. Knit two more rows for a total of four rows. Cast on 9 sts, knit in pattern across these sts and the next 22 sts, cast on 9 sts. You are now back to the original 40 sts you began with, you will knit back and forth on these sts instead of around for 3 1/2 inches. Next right side row, join and begin knitting in the round for 1 inch. Knit 10 sts so the beginning and end of the round is again on the side of the cover. Rearrange stitches if you need to so you have 20 sts on two needles. Finish: Kitchener graft the sts together. I did a purl graft to match the beginning edg Make a tie closure by crocheting a 10-12 inch chain and weaving it around the opening of the cover. Slip the larger end of the cover over the sweeper and then the split end, pullthe ties together like a drawstring and make a bowknot. All done. Admire your handiwork and happy sweeping.
