Reversable Jack Hat W/ Earflaps
By: Alyshia West

Ok, so this is my pattern for a double knit Jack Skellington Hat made on a set of 3.5mm or size 4 knitting needles. This pattern is for an average adult head, so I suppose Med. This is my first pattern so I apoligize if it's not worded toowell.
Materials:
US4 knitting needles 14 in. 1 Skein of Patons Astra in Black and one in White Darning needle for weaving in ends and sewing back seam Spare knitting needles/ stitch holders Definition for those who don't usually double knit: St- double knit st is comprised of two strands 1 main and 1 contrast, the 2sts are referred as 1 whole st. Main Color st- main color of row (first st color) Contrast/ Pattern st- pattern color of row (second st color) K- knit P-purl Inc - increase - for this double knit pattern, knit with both strands of yarn for main color strand, and purl with both strands for pattern strand. What is done to one must be done to the other. Dec- Decrease- for double knit decrease, take your extra needle, slip main color st onto spare needle, slip contrast st onto another, slip second main st onto spare needle, slide the contrast st from second needle back onto its original needle and slide the other two main st from first spare back onto original needle. There should now be two main sts, and two contrast sts side by side. Knit the 2 main sts together, purl the 2 contrast sts together. Ear Flap (Make 2): Cast on 3 sts (leaving a long tail for tie braiding) using both strands of color at the same time, this gives a braided edge to the cast one edges. There are now 6 sts, 3 of each color, remember to knit with one color and purl with the next, same color order in the same row, opposite in next. Inc1, K1, Inc1 (start with white strand inc knit, black inc purl, white K, black P, white Inc K, black Inc P)(5 sts) Inc1, K3, Inc1 (new row start with black inc K, white inc P, black K, white P, black K, white P, black K, white P, black inc K, white inc P) (7sts) Inc1, K5, Inc1 (9sts) Continue in this way until sts reach 29 sts. Transfer to a stitch holder or spare knitting needle (Double point needles work best).
Hat:
Cast on 13 sts (using both strands at once), join to an earflap by knitting across (K main, Purl contrast), cast on 27sts, join second earflap (same color facing you as the first) by knitting across, and cast on the last 13 sts. Try to weave in the yarn from the cut-offs if you can, if not weave them in later with your darning needle. There should now be 111 sts. Determine your new rows' main color by earflap color facing you and start your pattern with that color. You can find the pattern on the next page. Read the pattern from right to left on odd rows, left to right on even rows. Cast on edge of hat I had done as the first row of the pattern with white as the main (read right to let), so second row was black (read left to right). Continue until the pattern is finished. Knit one row. K9, Dec1, K100 (110sts)
Decrease Rnd:
\*K8, Dec1\* across (99) K across \*K7, Dec1\* across (88) K across \*K6, Dec1\* across (77) K across \*K5, Dec1\* across (66) K across \*K4, Dec1\* across (55) K across \*K3, Dec1\* across (44) K across \*K2, Dec1\* across (33) K across \*K1, Dec1\* across (22) K across \*Dec1\* across (11) K across \*Dec1\* across K1 (6) Cut yarn leaving long tails for sewing the seam of the hat. Weave tail through the remaining sts and sew the seam (white for white, black for black). Using spare yarn sew little stitches throughout the mouth, being careful not to go through the other side. Pull one long piece of each color halfway through bottom of earflap (creating two pieces each) and braid the pieces together with the cast on yarns (6 total pieces), knot and cut off ends where desired. And that is my jack hat hope you enjoyed!
