Size 5, 2 24" circular needles could use 16" or 20" Gauge- 17 sts x25 rows in 4 stitch x 6 row basketweave pattern Scarf size finished - 50 %" x8" The scarf is knit from both ends of a centerpull ball, so you can knit until you run out of yarn, or until the scarf is as long as you like. h a provisional cast on, I used the crochet cast on, leave a tail long enough to splice. Work the neck portion of the scarf in Knit 2 Purl 2 rib, always slipping the first stitch of the row as if to purl with yarn in front and knitting the last stitch of the row. Work the rib for desired length, mine is 17", try it around your neck, mine was knit for a tall man. With the second needle pick up 46 sts from the provisional cast on and splice in the other end of the ball to the tail. Work both ends of the scarf at once on 2 needles. Keeping the first st as a sl as if to purl, 4 sts in seed stitch, 36 sts in 4x6 basketweave , 4 sts in seed stitch, and always knit the last stitch. Work in pattern until about %" from desired length of scarf, mine is 17", try it on! Work %" in seed stitch, keeping the first st as if to purl and knitting the last stitch. Cast off with EZ's sewn cast off or whichever cast off you prefer. f the seamen's scarf are from Myrna Stahman's wonderful Shawls and Scarves boo arn felt rather stiff after spinning, but is very soft with a lovely drape after washing!
