I love the feather-and-fan pattern. It is a wonderful catchy but not too simple pattern. You can use it with nearly every yarn, despite of the colour. It doesn't matter if your yarn is thick or thin. It always looks different and will not get boring. You can knit Wellenreiter with nearly every yarn you like. Depending on what yarn you choose you will get a small shawlette or a bigger scarf.

The amount of stitches to start with part 2 ,Wavepattern" needs to be divided by 18 +2. Possible amount of stitches are 254 (252 + 2)/272 (270+2)/290 (288+2)/308 (306 + 2) and so on. It doesn't matter if you reach the required amount of stitches on the right side or the wrong side of your project. The increases inbetween the markers (middle of the shawl) will only be made on the right side. Therefor you might want to mark your right side with a safety pin or some scrap yarn. The increases at the beginning and the end of the row will be made in every row.
