Materials
2 skeins of O-Wool Balance Bulky (sample knit in Cinnabar). US size 10, 8 inch DPNs (need the full 8 inches to accommodate stitch count). US size 11, 24" or 32" circular needle. 2 locking stitch markers or safety pins.
Gauge
11 stitches = 4 inches in Stockinette stitch on smaller needles. Abbreviations K: knit P: purl YO: yarn over sl2: slip 2 P2SsO: pass two slipped stitches over K2TOG: knit two together KFB: knit into the front and back of the stitch
Star lace pattern
Row 1 & 3: Knit all stitches Row 2: K1, \*YO, sl2 knitwise, K1, P2SSO, YO, K1; repeat from \* until end of row. Row 4: SSK, YO, K1, \*YO, sl2 knitwise, K1, P2SSO, YO, K1; repeat until 2 stitches remain, YO, K2TOG.
Instructions
Base of bag: Using size 10 DPNs, cast on 6 stitches. Distribute between two needles. Join to work in the round, adding DPNs as needed. Row 1: \*Knit 1, YO; repeat from \* to end of row. Row 2 & all other even numbers: Knit all stitches. Row 3: \*Knit 2, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. Row 5: \*Knit 3, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. Row 7: \*Knit 4, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. Row 9: \*Knit 5, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. Row 11: \*Knit 6, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. Row 13: \*Knit 7, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. Row 15: \*Knit 8, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. Row 17: \*Knit 9, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. Row 19: \*Knit 10, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. Row 21: \*Knit 11, YO; repeat from \* to end of round. 72 stitches. Row 22: KFB of first stitch. Knit until end of row. 73 stitches. Switch to size 11 circular needles and, beginning with row two of the Star Lace Pattern, work through rows 2 - 4. Repeat Star Lace pattern an additional 7 times.
Decreases & Straps
Rows l-3: Knit all stitches Row 4: \*Knit 2, K2TOG; repeat until end of round. Row 5: Knit all stitches Bind off all stitches. Fold your new bag in half. Using locking stitch markers or safety pins, mark the mid-points along the bind off edge. Using size 10 DPNs, pick up and knit three stitches to the right of the first safety pin and three stitches to the left of it. Work these six stitches in garter stitch until first strap measures 24 inches and bind off. Repeat for second strap. Adjustable straps allow market bag to be worn across the body or over the shoulder.
