DylaniumKnits Original Toque Pattern: Vibrant Spiral Design for Winter Warmth and Style

toque

a DylaniumKnits original design Sources say that we can lose up to 90% of our body heat through our uncovered heads. During a long Canadian (/American/European/anywhere coldian) winter, it's important to keep covered and avoid all potential threats of hypothermia while looking absolutely FABulous, dahling. The vibrant colours, amazing spiral pattern, and cozy, springy, 100% washable merino wool make this the perfect winter accessory. The weather outside is dark and gloomy and this is so often reflected in how we dress. Let's kick winter's ass and show it what we're made of! The colours emote happiness, hope for spring, and an edgy conviviality, while the ease of the pattern and practical nature of the garment serve its pragmatic uses for keeping us warm creating near instant knitting gratification. The key to creating the swirl pattern is how the yarn is dyed, the tension used, and the number of stitches. This is why DylaniumKnits has taken the time, done the math, and created a great pattern to get you started. It's possible that you won't have quite the same tension as the designer, so if you start making the toque and the colours are not working out, go up or down a needle size until it creates an image you're happy with. Also, keep in mind that the yarn for this toque is 100% hand-dyed, so each skein is a little bit different, meaning the colouring on each toque will be a little bit different. Some will have thinner stripes, some thicker pools of colour, and sometimes the direction of the spiral might change mid-way. This creates a completely unique yet super adorable piece to add to your winter wears!

Directions

Using 16" circular needle, CO 120 sts, leaving at least a 6" tail. Count your sts to ensure that there are 120. PM and join the round, ensuring that the sts are not twisted. Use both the main yarn and the tail yarn for the first 4 sts to lock the tail yarn into place. After the 4th st, drop the tail yarn and use the main throughout the rest of the hat. Round 1: [P2, K2] until end of round. Rounds 2+: Continue [P2, K2] pattern. Continue ribbing pattern until the work measures 5 1/4" (13cm) from cast-on edge. If you are making the toque for a larger head (24" and bigger), you may wish to continue ribbing until the work measures 5 1/2" (14cm). At this point, begin decreasing sts to shape the crown of the toque, according to the directions below. Once the stitches on the circular needle get too tight (probably when 90 sts remain) transfer the work to 3 DPNs by slipping the sts purlwise off the circular needle, ensuring the sts are evenly distributed on the DPNs. For example, if 90 sts remain, place 30 sts on each DPN. Decrease round 1: [P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, k2tog] until end of round. (110 sts remain) Decrease round 2: [P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K1] until end of round. (110 sts) Decrease round 3: [P2, K2, P2, K2, P1, k2tog] until end of round. (100 sts) Decrease round 4: [P2, K2, P2, K2, k2tog] until end of round. (90 sts) Decrease round 5: [P2, K2, P2, K3] until end of round. (90 sts) Decrease round 6: [P2, K2, P2, K1, k2tog] until end of round. (80 sts) Decrease round 7: [P2, K2, P2, K2] until end of round. (80 sts) Decrease round 8: [P2, K2, P2, k2tog] until end of round. (70 sts) Decrease round 9: [P2. K2, P1, k2tog] until end of round. (60 sts) Decrease round 10: [P2, K2, k2tog] until end of round. (50 sts) Decrease round 11: [P2, K1, k2tog] until end of round. (40 sts) Decrease round 12: [P2, k2tog] until end of round. (30 sts) Decrease round 13: [P1, k2tog] until end of round. (20 sts) Decrease round 14: [k2tog] until end of round. (10 sts) Leaving the remaining 10 sts on the DPNs, carefully cut the yarn from the rest of the ball, leaving a 6" tail. Thread the tail through the darning needle. Continuing in the same direction that you have been knitting, slip the sts purlwise from the first DPN onto the darning needle. Continue in the same direction and slip the sts off the next two DPNs so that all of the 10 sts are on the tail yarn at the top of the crown. Pull tightly to close the crown and weave in the end to secure the closure. Cut the remaining yarn from the tip of the crown, weave in the end at the CO edge and cut the yarn.
