Little Paw Sweater

Pattern illustration

I was ask to make a pattern for my dog sweater. And here it is. This pattern is not a fully description. It is more of a recipe because every dog is different. Some dogs have a wider chest, some have long backs or necks. This pattern should help you to create a sweater for your own dog. Requirements are working short rows. This technique is not my favorite. So it's not easy for me to describe. There are a lot of good youtube videos on this subject. I embroider to read the pattern: 'Celtic Knot Mini Dog Sweater by Carmela Biscuit on Ravelry' as introduction. This is a very good description how to work a dog sweater. This pattern incorporates the wonderful 'Fox Paws by Xandy Peters on Ravelry'. The Little Paw Sweater is for a shorthaired Jack Russell Terrier medium sized with a girth of 42 cm. The Sweater is worked top down partly in rows and partly in rounds. It has openings for the front legs which are worked in the round.

's important that your dog tries your knitted piece on to calculate the right size

The measurements given in this pattern are after washing and blocking (approx). This pattern contains some german words. Please ignore them.

Attention

Maybe this sweater slips down tailwards while wearing. This effect I reduced by forming an exacly fitting breast. See below:

My dog likes to shake himself. And then the sweater slips again. I have no recipe to hinder this slipping at the moment. It makes me crazy. Do you have an idea against slipping? And now - dogs and mistresses - have much fun with your needlework.

Now split your work into 4 sections to knit the part between the legs (black arrow). <--Here the breast is continued. 1. Section: Put 23 sts of the front middle on main needle. 2. & 3.Section: On both sides of section 1 mark each 14 sts for the leg openings with a stitch marker and put them on a stitch holder. This sts will be for the pant legs.

To gauge the fit of the sweater I worked the legs now. Pick up 32 sts onto dpns size 4 mm/US 6 around one leg opening inclusive the leg sts. Knit 2x2 ribbing for 11 rows (3.5 cm). Bind off. Work the second leg opening just the way the first leg opening is worked.

Continue with all stitches on the main needle. You are now at the black arrow position of the chest. Work some sts of the chest (red marked area = 22 sts) 1 round knit, 1 round purl alternating. The ribbing stabilizes this area. Work 12 rounds = 2.5 cm. After this purl around. Next Row knit and bind off the 19 middle sts of the belly for a convenient opening for male dogs (blue line). Continue in rows. Knit all sts. Decreases for rounding both sides of the opening in every second row: - bind off 2 sts 1 times, - knit 2 stitches besides the edge stitch together 2 times.
