Sir Gareth Medieval Armor Inspired Knitting Pattern for Fingering Weight Socks with Detailed Instructions

Gareth

Pattern illustration

I designed these socks for my husband. He thought the stitch pattern looked like medieval armor, so I named them after my favorite knight from King Arthur's court: Sir Gareth. Yarn: About 437 yards fingering weight yarn. I used one 100 g hank of Cascade Heritage, and my husband wears a US size 12 shoe. I'd recommend a 150 g hank for a man's size. The color shown is Steel (5602). Needles: 32" or longer circular needles in the size that gives you gauge. I used 00 needles, but I am a very loose knitter. Gauge: 8 1/2 stitches per inch k: knit p: purl RS: right side WS:wrongside sl: slip ssk: slip one stitch, slip one stitch, knit these two stitches together through the back loops sts: stitches p2tog: purl two together k2tog: knit two together

Cuff

Using a long-tail or other stretchy cast on, cast on 72 stitches. Divide the stitches so that you have 36 on each side of the Magic Loop, and join for working in the round. Knit 20 rounds in K 1, P 1 ribbing.

Leg

Begin chart. Work two complete repeats. (lf you want to change the length of the leg, be sure to stop with round 22 or 44).

Heel

The heel flap is knit back and forth in rows over 36 stitches. To knit the heel flap: Row 1 (RS): p 3, \*sl 1, k 1 to last 3 sts, k 3, turn Row 2 (WS): k 3, p to end, turn Repeat these two rows for a total of 36 rows. Turn the heel: Row 1: sl 1, k 19, ssk, k 1, turn Row 2: sl 1, p 7, p2tog, p 1, turn Row 3: sl 1, k to 1 st before gap, ssk, k 1, turn Row 4: sl 1, p to 1 st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all sts have been worked and 22 sts remain.

Gusset Setup

Pick up 18 stitches along the heel flap (one for every garter bump along the edge). Knit across the instep, resuming the chart with Round 1 (if you stopped with Round 44). Knit 29 sts, place marker for new beginning of round, and knit 29 stitches. Pick 18 stitches along the other side of the instep.

Gusset Decreases

Continue working the chart over the instep stitches. Work the sole of the foot in stockinette, decreasing 2 sts every other row, as follows, until 36 sts remain. Round 1: k sole stitches; work chart over instep Round 2: k to last 3 sts of foot, k2tog, k 1; work chart across instep; k 1, ssk, k to end When you have 36 sts on both sides of the Magic Loop, move your beginning of round marker back to the beginning on the instep stitches.

Toe

When sock is 1 %2 to 2 inches less than desired length, begin toe decreases. Decrease Rounds are as follows: \*k 1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1, repeat from \* to end Decrease every third row 4 times. Decrease every other row 5 times. Decrease every row 4 times. You should have 12 sts remaining on each needle.

Finishing

Graft toes with Kitchener stitch, and weave in in your ends.
