Serendipity's Ripple Afghan Pattern
I don't know about you, but here at Serendipity's Attic we are a bit pressed for time. Not that we're complaining. Being busy is nice in itself but finding any quick crochet projects to make without sacrificing looks is always a bonus. When I was recently ill with flu, all I wanted was something to cozy up to. My two Boxer dogs Petey and Sammy happily volunteered as personal space heaters but I still longed for that old fashioned afghan to snuggle. The problem with afghans is that they usually take forever to make. So being barred from any physical activity I scoured the internets for afghan stitches and patterns. I attempted to make several of them but was not happy with either the very slow progress or it just felt overly loose. I knew that they would eventually stretch and lose their shape and I really wanted something that could be washed when needed and could stand up to the heavy use. I found a vintage stitch, changed the stitches so it would crochet quickly, without too much give, and fell in love with the results. A very brightly colored, textured afghan that makes me smile while working on it and stitches up super fast. I hope you love it too. Yarn: Red Heart with Love (or any heavier weight worsted weight yarn) Hook Size: I Hook 5.5mm (or any hook that gives you the drape that you like.) Blunt Yarn Needle for weaving in loose ends later. Lused Gcolrsin Red Heart with Love. you can use any color combos you desire. The colors in this afghan are: Blue Hawaii Lettuce candy Pink Daffodil mango Lilac

Click below (or copy and paste) if you need video help making a slip knot. Lion Brand YouTube: http://youtu.be/Q9HnOwtwgL4 I make a slip knot with the new color, then insert the loop into the old color. I cinch above the new knot with the previous color (just pullthe yarn, it won't unravel) and then pull on the short strand of the new color to adjust the new loop to the hook size. Chain 1, turn and the color change is complete. I sometimes tie the two short strands together and then weave all of those pesky loose ends in (later) with a yarn needle. I always use this method when doing a color change. You can Google other ways to change to the next color or use your usual method for a color change. Do what works best for you.

Here is a visual for the back loops only. If you look at the top of your finished row it looks like a V shape. The pink highlights below are the front loops, the blue highlights are the back loops. In most crochet patterns you work through both loops. But for this pattern it is worked in the back loops only.

And that's the pattern! Simple but quick with a pretty texture. You can add any type of fancy or simple edging you desire or leave it as is for an old fashioned look. Please feel free to email me at kerry.haas@gmail.com with any questions you have or if you need pattern help. I am more than happy to walk you through it. -derry Lee Haas
