Beaded Goldfish Pendant Bag P-16

Pattern illustration

This goldfish pendant bag is worked flat using the beaded knitting technique described below. The fins are picked up and knit on the fish body. The necklace/strap is beaded on wire, although beaded I-cord (instructions included) will work as well. One hank of seed beads and one ball of perle cotton will make at least two bags. Finished size: 312"x 212

Techniques

Transferring Seed Beads To Cotton - In order to do bead knitting, seed beads must first be transferred from the hank to the cotton. For best results, place the hank of beads on a cookie sheet or something similar to catch "runaways". Carefully separate one end of one strand from the hank. Tie a knot around the last bead in the strand and remove the other end from the hank. This will keep the beads from slipping off the end. Unwind 3-4 yards of cotton. Tie (one tie only, do not knot) the unknotted end of the bead string to the cotton, about 1%2"-1" from the end. Gently slide the beads from the strand, over the tie and onto the cotton. Transfer short sections of beads and move them down the full length of the cotton. If a bead will not go over the tie, undo it and remove the bead. As the work progresses, continue to gently slide the beads down the length of the cotton. Beaded Knitting (Kslip) - Insert the needle into the st to be knit, slide bead up against needle and knit the st. This technique is used when knitting on the wrong side (WS) and results in bead placement on the right side (RS). inc - increase. Knit in the front and the back of the next st. To increase with beads, place bead on first st of increaseonly. skp - slip, knit, pass. Slip the next st as if to purl, knit the following st, pass the slipped st over the knit st. To skp with beads, Kslip on the knit st. 3 Needle Join. Divide sts evenly on 2 needles. Fold wrong sides of work together. Holding the needles parallel, \*k2tog\* (1 from front needle, 1 from back needle). Repeat \*\* once. Continue to k2tog, 1 front st, 1 back st, and work across. Instructions may also require a Kslip with k2tog. w&t - Wrap & Turn, short rows. Slip the next st, bring the yarn forward and slip slipped st back onto left needle. Turn work. Kslip on all WS short rows, including the yarn forward step. I-Cord - Knit 3 sts on double pointed needle. Do not turn the work. \*Slide the 3 sts to the other end of the dpn and K\*. Repeat \*\* until cord is desired length. To finish, sew tail through all three sts with tapestry needle and tie off. General Guidelines Throughout this pattern these guidelines and their exceptions apply unless otherwise noted: 1) The first st of every row is slipped knitwise. Exception: Do not slip the first st on rows beginning with inc or skp. 2) All RS rows are worked without beads, i.e., Slip 1, \*knit\*, across. 3) All wS rows are worked with beads, i.e., Slip 1, \*Kslip\*, across. Exception: Parts of the tail and dorsal fin are Kslip on every row. 4) When the work becomes too crowded on one needle, divide the sts evenly on two needles and knit across each needle individually with a third.

Dorsal Fin

All rows of Dorsal Fin are Kslip

Hold fish, wrong sides together, head right, and match open edges. Pick up 16 sts along top front edge as follows: insert needle under cotton as it comes out of the top of each bead. Attach cotton at tail end of needle. Row 1: Kslip across all sts. Row 2: Skp, \*Kslip\* to last st, inc. (16 sts) Row 3: Inc, \*Kslip\* to last 2 sts, skp. (16 sts) Row 4: Skp, \*Kslip\* across. Bring tail through last st and work down edge of fin and into body.

Side Fin

Lay fish on table, match open edges, head facing right. Decide where you want the side fin to be. Place it about 1/2" up from the bottom edge of the fish at an angle back to the tail. Pick up 4 sts. Attach cotton at mouth end of needle. Row 1: Kslip in the back of each st. Row 2: Inc in each st across. (8 sts) Row 3: Slip 1, \*Kslip\* across. Row 4: Slip 1, \*k\* to last st, inc. Bring tail through last st and work down underside of fin and into body.

Finishing

Match top edges and hold together while stitching. Sew from tail and into body about %", ending with a double stitch. Work ends to WS and tie off. Fold mouth in half and stitch directly under cast on edge to join. Stitch mouth section together and about %" of body. Finish as for tail end. Opening should be about 2%". Determine eye location. Knot thread on RS of fish body. Bring thread through glass disk and one seed bead. Take needle back through disk only and to WS. Make small knot, bring thread back to RS and knot under eye. Necklace: Cut length of beading wire 2" longer than desired. With right side facing, insert wire through top seam near mouth end, 3 beads from open edge, and extending 1%2" to the back. Thread 3 beads on each section of the wire (front & back). Thread crimp bead on long (front) section of wire, bring back wire through crimp bead, pull loop snug and crimp. Work short tail into cord as beads are strung. String 1 "bubble", 5 seed beads, 1 bubble, 6 seed beads, adding 1 seed bead between each bubble until 5 bubbles have been strung. String necklace to desired length. String crimp bead, 3 beads, insert wire through seam near tail, string 3 beads, pass wire through crimp bead and crimp. Trim wire. Beaded I-cord: (see Techniques) \*Knit 3 rounds I-cord withoutbeads.NextRound:Kniteachstasfollows:slide a bead as in Kslip, and push it through the new st from back to front.\* When knitting a round without beads, keep the bead from the previous round below needle as it enters the stitch. Repeat \*\* until cord is 24-26" long. Knit 3 rounds without beads, cut cotton leaving about 6" tail. Bring tail through sts, tie off. Sew cord ends to body, making sure to distribute stitches on both sides of seam.
