Rotary Club of Georgetown Remembrance Day Poppy
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie InFlandersfields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. Ifye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow InFlandersfields.

Our Rotary club hosts a Veteran's Day breakfast every year, and this year, I thought it would be nice to present each of the veterans and their guests with a hand knit poppy. I enrolled the assistance of my knitting group (Silvercreek Stitch and Sip) to knit the poppies and they enthusiastically agreed. I created this design from several flower patterns that I found on Ravelry, so I cannot take credit for the design as it is inspired from others. If you choose to knit some of these poppies for remembrance, please continue to donate to your local Legion or veterans group as these donations are greatly needed. Thanks - Susan

This poppy is designed to be made quickly with scrap yarn. (l can knit and weave in ends in about 20 minutes and I am not a super fast knitter). I knit several, then do the beading on the completed ones, then tie the backing pin securing it with a spot of good craft glue).
Materials:
Scrap red yarn -I used about 5 yds per poppy of Debbie Bliss Prima (DK weight) 5-15 black beads and needle threaded with black thread or a black button Backing Pin Appropriate size circular needle - I used Us 5 needle Tapestry needle Good craft glue Cast on 4 with 3-4" tail Row 1: KFB, K3 (5 stitches) Row 2: KFB, P1 with tail, P1, P1 with tail, P1 (6 stitches) Row 3: KFB, K5 (7 stitches) Row 4: KFB, P6 (8 stiches) - cut 3-4" tail On same needle, cast on 4 Repeat rows 1-4 Make 4 and do not cut 4th tail Now these will become one flower (join all together in next round) Place marker, then purl 8 stitches from petal 1 Purl first and third stitches on petal 2 with the tail (from previous petal), then purl rest with live yarn Purl first and third stitches on petal 3 with the tail, then purl rest with live yarn Purl first and third stiches on petal 4 with tail, then purl rest with live yarn End of round 1 Round 2: purl 2 together all the way around (16 stitches) Round 3: purl 2 together all the way around (8 stitches) : 6" tail and draw the 8 stitches together using the tapestry needle Weave in the ends other than the last 6" tail Next sew the beads (or button) to the front center of the flower Use the 6" tail to tie on the backing pin, then secure with a spot of glue.
