If you have any question while making the Frog or find a mistake in this pattern, send email to me at : Chiwaluv @comcast.net Materials: · Dk, Sport yarn: Pink or blue for Bows, Acrylic 4 ply for Frog - green shade, gold Crochet hook suitable for the yarn you use: (I used an E for the frog, and D for the bow) · 2-20 mm plastic clear eyes - Paint in color of choice with acrylic paint. · scissors · Polyester fiber fill · Sewing needle for yarn Finished Size: Approximately 5-6 inches tall Your finished Frog might finish in bigger or smaller than mine depending on your tension and the yarn you use. Abbreviation I use: 1. = Round ch = chain sc = single crochet dc = double crochet tr = treble crochet inc = increase (2sc in same stitch) dec = decrease (2sc worked together) sl st = slip stitch(es) FO = fasten off yarn, lv tail for sewing BLO = back loop only of next stitch \* = repeat directions between \* and \* as many as indicated I start crochet by making a Magic ring as in Japanese style. It makes the starting hole tight and secure. You can start in which ever way you feel comfortable. Traditionally the frog has red eyes, and three legs, however I wanted a more traditional frog (toad).You may put any color eyes on your frog, and dress it up with more coins, a bow for a girl and a bow tie for a boy! 20 mm plastic clear eyes - Paint in color of choice with acrylic paint. HEAD AND BODY: Make 1, work with a marker and move it up to beginning stitch on everyround. 1. Ch-14, count 14 sts along edge and sc in the 14th st, finish sc around to your marker. 9. sc in each st (42 sts) 10. \* sc 6, sc dec 1 \* repeat 5 times (42 sts) 11. \* sc 5, sc dec 1 \* repeat 5 times (36 sts) 12. \* sc 4, sc dec 1 \* repeat 5 times (30 sts) 13. \* sc 3, sc dec 1 \* repeat 5 times (24 sts) 14. \* sc 2, sc dec 1 \* repeat 5 times (18 sts) 15. \* sc 1. sc dec 1\* repeat 5times (12 sts) 16. \* sc dec 1\* repeat 5 times (6 sts) FO, lv yarn tail, thread a yarn needle and draw hole closed, weave yarn ends into piece. Go in through the mouth opening and Attach safety eyes between rnds 5 and 6 spaced 12 sts apart- or you may hot glue into place after your frog is completed, I prefer this method as you get a better placement. Using a pencil (insert to open up a hole for the eye stem in the fiber fill where you want your eyes, then fill with hot glue, and instert your eye stem. MAKE sure you are positive on the eye placement , as these cannot be removed once glued in. Throw away the lock piece to the eye, you will not need it. MOUTH INSERT: make 1 with a contrasting color yarn or red (I used a darker green) 1. Make a magic ring with 6 sc or ch-2 and work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook 2. \*sc inc 1\*, repeat 5 times (12 sts) 3. \* sc 1, sc inc 1 \* repeat 5 times (18 sts) 4. \* sc 2, sc inc 1 \* repeat 5 times (24 sts) 5. \* sc 3 sc inc 1 \* repeat 5 times (30 sts) FO, Attach Body color yarn 6. sc in each st around (30 sts) FO , lv a yarn tail for sewing the mouth insert to the inside of the mouth hole located on the head and body piece. Line up the piece's with wrong sides together, and whip stitch around, STUFF the head and body as you sew into place, you must form the polyester fiber fill into the lower jaw as well as the top of the head Firmly.
BACK UPPER LEG: make 2
1. Make a magic ring with 6 sc or ch-2 and work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook 2. \*sc inc 1\*, repeat 5 times (12 sts) 3. \* sc 1, sc inc 1 \* repeat 5 times (18 sts) 4. \* sc 2, sc inc 1 \* repeat 5 times (24 sts) 5-6. sc in each st (24 sts) FO , lv yarn tail to sew to lower sides of head and body piece. Holding the head and body piece, count 4-5 stitches back from corner of the frogs mouth, line up the top of the Back upper leg piece on this round. Whip stitch into place -stuffing as you sew into place. Repeat on oppisite side of your frog sewing the 2nd Back upper leg in to place.
REAR FEET: make 2
1. ch-1o, turn sc in 2nd chain from hoo, and sc along chain just made (9sts) 2. Work in BLO of chain , sc 6, ch-4, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in the next 2 ch, sc in BLO of the reamining 6 sts for a total of (9 sts). Ch-1 turn 3. repeat row 2 once more. FO , lv yarn tail and sew Rear Feet to bottom of the Back upper leg pieces. MAKE SURE the toes point forward. Work 2 - 4 dc bobbles between the Back Upper leg pieces, these will help balance your frog and keep it from toppling over.
HOW TO BOBBLE:
\*yo insert hook draw up a loop, yo, draw thru two loops,\* repeat \* to \* four more times, retaining last six loops on hook, yo and draw thru last six loops, work a sl st at base of bobble. (ALL OF THIS IS DONE IN THE SAME ST!) FO, tie and work ends in to piece. CHINESE COIN: Make 2 - per coin in a gold color yarn 1. ch-2, Loosely , you do NOT want the first ch to tighten , this will make the hole in your Chinese coin. work 6 sc in the 2nd ch from hook. 2. \*sc inc 1\*, repeat 5 times (12 sts) 3. \* sc 1, sc inc 1 \* repeat 5 times (18 sts) FO, lv yarn tail to sew 2 pieces together to complete one Chinese coin. Place in frogs mouth. Bow: Make 1 in color of choice 1. Ch-14 , turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in each ch across (13 sts) 2-3. sc in each st across , ch-1 turn at end of each row. (13 sts) FO at end of row 3. FOLD piece in half, whip stitch ends together. Tightly wrap piece of yarn around center of piece to make bow effect. Sew to top of your frogs head. for a girl frog place on top of head between the eyes , for a boy frog, place on chin directly under the frogs mouth. Now enjoy your new found wealth increase and happy life!
