Flower and Trebles Square pattern by Ameli Beebe (champygirl) c. 2010
Tutorial by Margaret Maclnnis c. 2012- Pattern can be found here http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=111167&highlight=Flower+Trebles+Square The block is considered at least an Intermediate Pattern. I found a lot of it very confusing, but once I broke it down into manageable 'parts', it wasn't so bad. (nothing to do with any 'part' in VCFC...) Part of the issue is the unconventional terminology, and part of the issue is the unconventional approaches to starting rounds. I hope to allay some of this confusion by showing a)my method of dealing with round changes and finishes b)a detailed explanation of the stitches that are commonly known as double treble clusters, but she renames as IFPTcST and CFPTST !! They are much easier than they sound. Trust me. ROUND 1—I used an adjustable loop and made COUNT (6 sc) that way. The 'work 6 sc into the second chain from the hook works very well, too. Your choice.

ROUND 2: This is your standard issue POPCORN, worked with 5 dc in each stitch. Each time you work the 5 dc, you pull the hook out, re-insert it into the top of the first of the 5, and pull the loop through. Then

ch as instructed (ch 3) Then fasten off (I use the old invisible join, but you can slip in the first chain of the first PC if you like!) COUNT is 6 POPCORNS depending if you want to switch colours or not.

ROUND 3 and 4: is pretty easy—I actually worked the hdc with an 'Air Crochet start', she does other things, but you could also just work the first hdc as 'ch 3 as hdc..', right? Whatever you like. The coUNT is 24 dc (or 4 in each ch-3 space), expanding to 36 hdc for Round 4, working 1 in one, and 2 in the next one.

ROUND 5: I just picked any old stitch and rejoined there, working a hdc in it (ch 2 in lieu or air crochet-—whatever suits your fancy. Some people do their first hdc as a join with sc, and ch 1, which is very nice. Anyway, make a hdc join somehow. Then work a good old standard front post double treble, by yo 3 times! That stitch goes AROUND the post of the dc in Round 3. Line it up as best you can. Then skip a hdc, and work a hdc in the next st, and 2 hdc in the one after that. Then another front post treble—if you think about it, you just work the front posts every second stitch in Round 3!! Since you need 12 of them altogether. So the sequence is Front post---skip hdc, hdc in next, 2 hdc in next. When you come back to the first one, you can work a second hdc into it.

And ROUND 6 doesn't need much explanation either; known as a 'squaring off row' in the sequence Corners (2 trc, ch 2, 2 trc) Sides (2 dc, 2 hdc, 3 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc)—leaving you with 60 st, and 4 ch-2 sp for ROUND 6.

ROUND 7 is just a continuation of that, but all dc--so 76 dc and 4 ch-2 sp.

: SERIOUSLY FUN ROUND if you understand what's going to happen. I do this in ster a)Run a piece of yarn under the stitches involved. I like to look ahead to where she's got the 'corner' written, and start from there. Ignore the first part. It's too confusing! So you'll need the yarn run under stitches 3, 6, 9 then 11, 14, 17. If you did it right, there will be two on each side. b)Realize that what she's asking you to do is essentially a FRONT POST DOUBLE TREBLE (3 yo hook) CLUSTER. Nothing more. Clusters are worked by working a series of stitches, each to their LAST step, leaving one loop on the hook for each. Ignore the abbreviations she uses. They are unconventional, and confusing. c)Repeat the sides all the same So the sequence is (after you've run your yarn and marked your stitches) 1)Make your corner as (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) -- start with an air crochet, but you can do the usual ch 3 bit if youwant. 2)Work 5 double crochet. 3)Take a deep breath, and yo hook 3 times.

first front post work---and leave the last loop of it on the hook. 2 loops on hook nol 5)Start your second front post—around the second marked stitch, and leave the last loop..3 loops on hooknow. 6)Start your third front post—-around the third marked stitch, and leave the last loop....4 loops on hook

7)Phew! Now yo, and pullthrough all 4 loops on hook! Front post double treble cluster made!

8)Fold your Cluster toward you, and count back from the last stitch it was worked around. You want to make 3 dc, ending in that stitch, so start two away from it..

9)Work 4 dc....

make another double treble front post cluster set in the next three stitches that ar

11)Finish the other sides..and slip back into the first dc-or whatever you like to finish (I do the Air Crochet finish here).

ROUND 8) Now you're kind of on your own. I tried the (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) and took it out since this is what it looked like-too much!
