Reversible Hooded Bath Towel with Garter, Double Moss, and Basket Weave Stitches - Easy and Functional Knitting Project

Project Details

Pattern illustration

It's FUNCTIONAL! This reversible hooded bath towel is designed to easily fold up to the size of its companion washcloth. It is easily stashed on a shelf or in a Baby Bag!

Pattern illustration

It's EAsY! The pattern incorporates Garter stitch borders around large blocks alternating between Double Moss and Basket Weave stitches - accomplished using only Knit and Purl stitches!

Pattern illustration

It's a LEARNING TOOL! Start by creating a few washcloths for practice! When you are comfortable, tackle the whole towel!

KNIT LIKE A PRO with advanced techniques!

Pattern illustration

Garter stich borders give a windowpane effect to the entire bath towel. Notice the detail in each window panel. The sides use a slip/twist stitch - this is part of the standard pattern. The top and bottom of each square are defined by casting off stitches, then picking them through the back loop on the next row. These are more advanced skills. To incorporate the top/bottom definition, just follow the Advanced rows in the pattern! These are identified with separate row numbers in the row by row instructions. Choose to knit or skip them - it's up to you!

Particulars
Size NICU/Newborn. Bath Towel is a rectangle approx. 22x 24 in. (56 x 61 cm) Washcloth are approximately 7 x7 in. (18 x 18 cm)
Skill LevelStandard Version: Very Easy. Advanced Version: Easy
YarnUse any absorbent, unmercerized worsted weight cotton. The sample was knit using 1 large skein (400 GR/710 YDs) of Bernat Handicrafter Cotton. There was enough for one hoodie towel and 3 washcloths, all with crochet edges, with about 40 grams left over.
Needles5 US (3.75 cm). If desired, use circular needles to accommodate stitch count.
GaugeGauge is not important for this project, however, the sample used the following: 19 stitches and 22 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Double Moss stitch using size 5 needles.
Make-up No-Sew. Crochet edging if desired.

Row 4: K 2, P2, Repeat across Repeat Rows 1-4 for Pattern
NOTE: Basket Weave is usually worked 4 ST over 5 Rows to create a square as opposed to a rectangle. For this project, we work the Basket Weave stitch over 4 rows to align more closely to the Double Moss stitch pattern.

Tip: To create the Garter stitch, knit or purl all rows. I prefer to purl, as it is easier (for me!) to purl into a knit stitch, then it is to knit into a purl stitch. Use whichever technique works for you!

Finishing (Advanced)Using the last stitch as your first loop, create a single crochet border. With right side facing you, start down the left edge as follows: CH1, SC in each stitch to the corner stitch. 3SC in the corner to turn the edge. Repeat for all four sides. At the last corner, crochet a loop as follows: Chain 15. Beginning in the second loop from the hook, SC in each stitch. On the 14 (last), SC through the corner stitch on the washcloth. Sl one more stitch through the washcloth and fasten off.
