Reversible Cables Wrist Warmers and Headband by Stefanie Goodwin-Ritter Sometimes I don't want to deal with "hat head," but I also don't want my ears to freeze off. I came up with this knitted headband, which has come in very handy during the winter in Chicago. With the remaining yarn, I made some wrist warmers to match! Supplies: Size 7 DPN's Size 7 straight needles Tapestry needle Stitch marker Cable Needle Sts Used: 4-st RPC: SI 2 sts to CN and hold to back, K2, P2 from CN. 4-st LPC: Sl 2 sts to CN and hold to front, P2, K2 from CN. Gauge: 24sts and $28\mathrm{\rows}=4^{\ast}$ in pattern. For the Headband: With DPN's, CO 2 sts and work I-cord for 9 inches. Begin increases as follows: Row 1 (RS) - K into f & B of all sts. Row 2 (WS) - K3, purl to last 3 sts, K3. (note - the first time you work this row will be all knit sts). Repeat these two rows a total of three times. Next RS row: K into f& b of first 3 sts, kto last 3 sts, k into f & b of last 3 sts. WoArk row 2 as above. Begin pattern as follows: Rows 1 & 3 (RS) - k3, [p2, k4, p2] twice, k3. Rows 2 & 4 (WS) - k3, [k2, p4, k2] twice, k3. Row 5 (RS) - k3, [4-st RPC, 4-st LPC] twice, k3. Rows 6, 8 & 10 (WS) - k3, [p2, k4, p2] twice, k3. Rows 7 & 9 (RS) - k3, [k2, p4, k2] twice, k3. Row 11 (RS) - k3, [4-st LPC, 4-st RPC] twice, k3. Row 12 (WS) - k3, [k2, p4, k2] twice, k3. Work these 12 rows a total of 9 times, or until piece is desired length. Work rns 1-3 of pattern, then begin decreases as follows: Row 1 (WS) - k3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Row 2 (Rs) - k2tog three times, k to last 6 sts, k2tog. Rows3, 5 & 7 - Work Row 1 again. Rows 4, 6 & 8 (RS) - K2tog all sts. With remaining two sts, work I-cord for 9 inches, then cast off remaining two sts. For the wrist warmers - make two: Cast on 40 [48] sts to DPN's with the german twist method (or your favorite cast-on method). Divide sts among 3 needles, join for round and pm. Begin patt: Rnds 1-4: \*P2, K4, P2, rep from \*. Rnd 5: $^{\star}4\cdot$ -st RPC, 4-st LPC, rep from \*. Rnds 6-10: $\star\mathsf{K}_{2}$ , P4, K2, rep from \*. Rnd 11: $^{\star}4$ -st LPC, 4-st RPC, rep from \*. Rnd 12: \*P2, K4, P2, rep from \*. Do these 12 rounds three times. Thumb round: Work round #1 in patt, but loosely cast offlast 4 [6] sts of rnd. Next round: Work round #2 in patt, and cast on 4 [6] sts using backward loop method at the end of the rnd. Continue working in patt for rnds 3-12. Work rnds 1-2. Cast off in patt. A note on sizing for the wrist warmers: These are meant to have a snug fit. If you would like to accomodate a larger wrist and hand size, follow the directions in [ when applicable. You can also go up or down in needle size to obtain a looser or tighter fit.
