Impulse-Yarn-Buy Capelet - the NEW Version!
By Suzanne Correira, www.fiberartsrepublic.com You bought the yarn because it was soooo pretty and soft and just called out to you. Maybe there were only a couple of skeins left, or maybe you could only afford a couple of skeins. So what do you do with your gorgeous yarn now? You're tired of scarves and it's not quite right for a hat or mittens. Here's one of my solutions . This capelet drapes beautifully and the black alpaca highlights the pastel Prism Domino beautifully - both in contrast of texture and color. The capelet is completely reversible because we are using ODD numbers of repeats in each stripe, in this case, 3 stripes accent and 9 stripes black background yarn. It is knitted in a simple garter stitch “lace", from the top down. You go until you run out of your accent yarn and bind off. It covers the arms, falling below the waist. I used the beginning of the Square Shawl Basic Shape from Derya Davenport (Laylock.org) for Basic Inspiration adapting it to make it a slightly elongated, not-quite-square shape, and a reversible color pattern. Materials (for this particular capelet): 2 skeins Prism Domino Jelly Bean (2 oz, 105 yds each). 12 oz of worsted weight black alpaca on a cone (another impulse buy). 24 inch Size 7 US circular needle. A few knitting markers. Whatever you normally have in your knitting bag. milar yarns, aim for a loose worsted weight gauge - 4.5/inch or so - but not crucial ( or your base yarn (the one you have the most of). Work back and forth as follow Set Up Row 1: \*K1, yo, repeat from \* to last stitch, K1. (5 stitches on needle total) Set Up Rows 2: Knit across. (still 5 stitches on needle) REPEAT THE ABOVE TWO ROWS ONCE (Now you have 9 stitches on the needle over 4 rows) Set Up Row 5: \*(K1,yo)2x, PM, repeat from \* twice, (K1,yo)2x, K1. (now you have 17 stitches and 3 markers on needle) Set Up Rows 6 and Row 7: Knit across. (Still 17 stitches and 3 markers on needle) Repeat Rows below for Pattern working each color from its own end of the needle: Row 1: K1, yo, \*Knit to marker, yo, SM, K1, yo, Repeat \* twice, yo, K1. Rows 2-3: Knit across. Change color to accent yarn for next Repeat. Work in a sequence of 9 rows (black) background yarn and 3 rows (multi accent yarn. Remember to work each color from its own end. Repeat until you run out of accent yarn or the capelet is as long as you like, then bind off loosely, removing markers as you go. Weave in ends and block if desired. Enjoy! You may widen either stripe by adding more plain knit rows, keeping the count an odd number, but that will change the shape and drape of the capelet as well. 3 x 9 works well for shape and drape. Please note that one of the end or beginning sections of the 4 sections will ALWAYS have 1 stitch more than the others. This is normal for the pattern and actually what makes the eyelet increases move so nicely (that and the 3 row repeat).
