Crochet Alphabet Blocks: Detailed Instructions for Creating Unique Letter Squares

Alphabet Blocks

Materials needed:

Crochet Hook Size H8 (5 mm) Scraps of yarn, any color, any weight Yarn Needle Cotton batting

Gauge:

In pattern, 16 sc and 18 rows = 4 inches (gauge is not critical, samples may vary) Finished dimensions: 4.5 x 4.5 in (again samples may vary)

Instructions:

I embrace randomness with this pattern - aside from a few key principles, each block is made of unique letterforms. I make squares between projects, using leftover yarn. You'll find slight variances between squares, which is fine - mix and match to make squares or rectangles of different sizes.

Step 1:

Choose two shades of yarn in relatively similar weights. You'll need very little - about an ounce of each color.

Step 2:

Work the main pattern (a simple sc square made of 21 rows and 19 sc), referring to letter grids to make the letter of your choice.

Letter Square Pattern:

Ch 20. R1: Skip first ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch across. Ch 1, turn. (19 sc worked) R2-20: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (19 sc) R21: Sc in each st across. Fasten off. (32 sc)

Finishing:

Select 6 squares of similar sizes. Using either a yarn and thread or sc, st sides together, working a few extra sts into each corner for extra security. Work 5 sides into an open cube, then stuff with cotton batting. Continue sewing remaining piece into place. Weave in any loose ends.
