Valentine's Massacre Mitts

Simple X and O cable up slightly Lacey gloves. Made as the boyfriend was being weird about celebrating V-Day. I made these to avoid poking said man with pointy needles. Love ya hun. I used One ball of Classic Elite Inca Alpaca (roughly 109 yards of a thinnish worsted) and size 7 DPNs, on gauge for this yarn. (5 sts per inch) You may find you need more yarn. It was a tight finish for me. at least 109 yarns of a worsted weight yarn with good sproing-ness. Set of four US 7 DPNs (or size to gauge) (circs can be used if markers are placed accordingly, my tester used different makers then she used for pattern) Cabling needle (or not if you can cable without one) waste yarn or stitch holder (for thumb) Terms used sts - stitches M1 - Make a stitch. Method up to you. 3x2 rib - knit three, purl two, repeat as needed. 2x2 rib - (knit 2, purl 2) K2tog - knit two stitches together as one ssk - slip 2 stitches, slide needle back in as to knit and do so PM - Place Marker Stitches used Laced Rib 1 - (purl in pattern, k2tog, yo,k1)\* Laced Rib 2 - (purl in pattern, k1, yo, ssk)\* Thumb Lace Rib- (purl in pattern, k2tog, yo)\*
The Cables.
NOTE: For a right cable slip two stitches onto cabling needle and hang behind the work. Knit 2, then knit the two from the cable. It will twist tight. For a left cable slip two stitches onto cabling needle and hang in front of work. Knit two, and then knit the two from the cable needle. It will be twisted tightly. Cables will ONLY be worked on needle two. For simplicity, the number of sts on Needle two is matched perfectly to the total cable pattern.

Right 2 (16 sts) The thumb gusset will be worked on needle one, the pattern on needle two, and the palm on three. This is the same on both the right and left mitts. The only thing that changes is how the stitches are arranged on the three needles. On the chart above, 1 is the thumb on both hands. If it helps, slide your hand into the needle triangle to visualize this method. Needle one will be the needle over your thumb, needle two the needle over the back of the hand and needle three the needle over the palm. The 'Left' on the chart is the left hand layout the \*Right' is the right hand layout. First row. Knit all sts. This will be 'row O' and not counted as a row. (I simply find this makes for a better mitt fit.) R1 through R7 are done in 3x2 rib all around. R8 through R13 are knit straight. Now, if you want a longer mitt..here is where you'd add more rounds to the mitt. More rounds mean more yarn! Here's where the needles begin to matter. N1 (start to work the thumb) R14 -k5, PM, M1, PM, K5 N2 (start to work the Cable) R 14 - P4, K8, P4 N3 (it's the palm) R 14 (and all other rows till the end rib) KNIT Now you've a base set up to work from.
Needle one is workedfromR14 as follows: R15 -(k5, PM, m1, PM, k5 R16 -(and all other even rows) Knit all R17 -K5, SM, M1,K1,M1,SM,K5 R18 -K5, SM, M1, K3, M1, SM, K5 R19 -K5, SM, M1, K5, M1,SM, K5 R20 - K5, SM, M1, K7, M1, SM, K5 R21 -K5, SM, M1, K9, M1, SM, K5 R22 -K5, SM, M1, K11, M1, SM, K5 R23(gusset Needle)-slip all 13 sts of thegusset onto waste yarn or holder. R24 Knit till Ribbing is reached | Needletwoisworkedasfollows: R15 (Pattern Needle/Needle two) Begin First X Cable R21 Begin O Cable R27 Begin Second X |
R35 through R37 Knit All (4 rounds) Note that from R35 all three needles will be worked together as a set of three and not individually as with the gusset and pattern needles. R38 Being careful to match the lower rib (meaning if the cuff starts as K3 then the top will start as the same and vis versa) use 3x2 rib R39 3x2 rib stitch R40 Lace Rib Stitch 1 (being sure to purl into the purl sts of the row before) R41 and R42 3x2 rib stitch R43 Lace Rib Stitch 2 (being sure to purl into the purl sts of the row before) R44 and R45 3x2 rib stitch Bind off either in pattern or in a manner you prefer. To finish thumb. Slip sts back onto needles, picking up as needed to have 18 total. Knit rows till knuckle is reached or till the thumb is almost as long as desired. Mine was 6 rounds. Beginning Thumb ribbing.. R1- 2x2 rib R2- Thumb Lace Rib (being sure to purl into the purl sts of the row before) R3- 2x2 rib R4-2x2 rib Bind off. Tuck in ends and enjoy the hand love. Finally! Actual charts. While these XnO cables are deadly simple, sometimes it is nice to actually see the cables charted. These charts are exactly what I typed up on the second page. They are on a separate page for two reasons. One, I apparently deleted my master non-PDF copy of this pattern during the Great Linus Shuffle. This means I really can't edit into my PDF without a lot of hassle or retyping it. Two, (and the only one I intended) I like to move my charts around and extra pages are nice for that. Lastly, these are charted using Sconcho, a FREE Linux-based chart maker.
