Notes

Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, we recommend that you circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning. US terminology used and hat is worked from the bottom up. Yarn: DK/Light Worsted/8ply baby yarn Hook: 5mm (H) Gauge: Starting chain should measure 16 (18, 20) inches respectively when stretched out. If not, change hook size accordingly. Abbreviations: Chain (ch) Half Double Crochet (hdc) Loop (lp) Repeat (rep) Slip Stitch (sl st) Space (sp) Stitch (st) Yarn Over (yo)

Special Stitches Used:

· Front Post Half Double Crochet (fphdc) - yo and insert hook from the front to the back around the post of the hdc of previous row. Complete as for a regular hdc stitch. Back Post Half Double Crochet (bphdc) - yo and insert hook from the back to the front around the post of the hdc of previous row. Complete as for a regular hdc stitch. ·V-Stitch (v st) - work (hdc1, ch1, hdc1) in st indicated.

Pattern

Ch48 (54, 60), join to form a ring being careful not to twist the chain. Round 1: Ch2 (counts as a hdc now and throughout), hdc into each st around, joining last hdc to ch2 with a sl st - 48 (54, 60) half double crochet. Round 2: Ch2, alternate fphdc & bphdc around, joining last to ch2 with a sl st - 48 (54, 60) alternate front post and back post half double crochet. Round 3: Ch 3, hdc in same st (counts as a v st),\*skp 2 sts, v st in next st\*, repeat from \* to \* around and join with sl st to first v st - 16 (18, 20) v sts. Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as a hdc), working from top to bottom around post of first hdc of first v st, work 3 fphdc, turn work so v st is sideways, working from bottom to top around post of second hdc of v st, ch1 and work 4 fphdc , \* skp next v st, working from top to bottom work 4 fphdc around post of first hdc of next v st, ch 1, turn work so v st is sideways, working from bottom to top around post of second hdc of v st, work 4 fphdc, rep from \* around; join with sl st in top of first hdc - 8 (9, 10) scales in total. Round 5: Ch 3, hdc in same st (counts as a v st), yo, insert hook in sp in the centre of the scales below and complete another v st, \*v st in next ch 1 sp of the unworked v st below, yo, insert hook in sp in the centre of the scales below and complete a v st, repeat from \* to \* around, ch1 and join with sl st to first v st - 16 (18, 20) v sts. Round 6: Repeat round 4 - 8 (9, 10) scales in total. Round 7: Ch2 (counts as a hdc from now on) and \* hdc into a sp before the scale, hdc into centre of scale, hdc into a sp before the next ch1 sp in v st below, hdc in ch1 sp of v st\*, repeat from \* to \* around, join last hdc to ch2 (please see photograph and diagram below) - 32 (36, 40) half double crochet.

Round 9: Sl st into centre of ch2 sp, ch4 (counts as a hdc and a ch2 sp), \*join with a hdc in ch2 sp, ch2\*, rep from \* to \* (ends with a ch2) and join to second chain of ch4 - 16 (18, 20) ch2 sps. Rounds 10 & 11: Repeat round 9. Round 12: Sl st into centre of ch2 sp, ch3 (counts as a hdc and a ch1), \*join with a hdc in next sp, ch1\*, rep from \* to \* (ends with a ch1) and join to second chain of ch3 - 16 (18, 20) ch1 sps. Round 13: Rep round 12. Round 14: Sl st into centre of ch1 sp, ch2 (counts as a hdc), hdc in ch1 sps around to end of rnd - 16 (18, 20) half double crochet. Round 15+: Ch2 (counts as a hdc), \*sk next sp, hdc in next sp\*, rep from \* to \* until hat is closed up. Tie off and hide loose ends. I hope you like this pattern!
