Moana

Moana is a light and beautiful suMMer dress with a gorgeous shape and drape. t is knit from the top down and features a v-neck, lacy sleeve cast off and a 4 point skirt. Sizing ranges from nb/15" to IOy/ 28
What you need
4mm 60cm circular needle (smaller sizes may also need 40cm when knitting in the round) 5mm 60 - 80cm circular needle (or needle 2 sizes bigger than gauge) 5 stitch markers.
Abbreviations
k- knit p-purl k2tog - knit two stitches together sm - slip marker SORM - start of round marker yo - yarn over sl1p - slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in back psso - pass slipped stitch over co - cast on stst - stocking stitch m1l - make 1 left. Pick up the bar between the stitch from the front, knit into the back of the stitch. m1r - make 1 right. Pick up the bar between the stitch from the back, knit into the front of the stitch. Kfb - Knit into the front and the back of the same stitch (increasing by 1 stitch). St - stitch/es Rep - repeat

To fit chest size of
15/16(17, 18, 19, 20, 21) (22,23, 24,25, 26, 27, 28) inches 38/40.5(43, 45.5, 48, 51, 53.5) (56, 58.5, 61, 63.5, 66, 68.5, 71) cm. Please choose a size based on the child's chest measurement rather than their age. If your child is older than the size you are knitting, knit the length to the age of the child rather than the size. Eg, Based on her chest measurement I knit my 6 year old daughter the 4y size. 1 then knit to the 6y length.
Get Comfy and Start Knitting
Using 4mm 60cm needle, loosely cast on using the long tail method 34(36, 36, 38, 40, 44) (46, 50, 52, 52, 54, 58, 60) stitches. (For the sizes under 12m you may want to cast on with a needle one size bigger) Row 1 - knit across placing markers as follows; 0-3m/15/16" 2/7/16/7/2 6m/17" 2/8/16/8/2 9m/18" 2/8/16/8/2 12m/19" 2/8/18/8/2 18m/20" 2/9/18/9/2 24m/21" 2/10/20/10/2 3y/22" 2/11/20/11/2 4y/23" 2/12/22/12/2 5y/24" 2/12/24/12/2 6y/25" 2/12/24/12/2 7y/26 2/13/24/13/2 8y/27" 2/14/26/14/2 10y/28" 2/15/26/15/2 Row 2 - kfb, k1, sm, "k1, m1l, knit to 1 st before marker, m1r, k1, sm. Casting off shoulder stitches
In the next row you will be casting off the shoulder stitches in the lacy cast off (see picture below) and will be left with 3 sections, the right front (when worn), the back and the left front (when worn). You will then join the fronts together and work the front and back separately before joining under the arms. The lacy cast off will not work out exactly in every size, it doesn't really matter if there is one less cast off or one extra at the edge of the sleeve.

Sizes 6m, 9m, 12m, 18m, 3y, 4y and 10y only Row 8- knit until 1 st before marker, m1r, k1, remove marker, cast off 1 st, move that stitch back to the left needle, \*(cast on 1 st, cast off 1 st, move that stitch back to the left needle) x 3 , cast off 3 st. Rep from " until you get to the marker, remove marker and cast off last sleeve stitch. Front Section.
You will now join the two front pieces together and continue knitting the front as a single section. Break yarn. With wrong side facing, slip all the left front stitches (when worn) from the right needle onto the left needle. Row 7 (Ws) - Rejoin yarn, k2, purl until 3 st remain of the left front, k1, pm, sl1p, k2tog (this will join the two fronts together), psso, k2, purl until 2 st remain, k2. You will now have 32(34, 34, 38, 38, 40) (42, 46, 48, 48, 50, 52, 54) stitches across the front. Row 2- Knit, pulling yarn tight across the join. Row 3- k2, purl to marker, remove marker, k2, purl until 2 st remain, k2. Row 4- k2, m1l, knit to 2 st remain, m1r, k2. Row 5 - k2, purl to 2 st remain, k2. Repeat rows 4 & 5 1(1, 2, 2, 2, 2) (3, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5) more times. . Break yarn. Stitch count 36(38, 40, 44, 44, 46) (50, 52, 56) 58, 60, 64, 66)
Back Section
Row 7 (ws) - Rejoin thread, k2, p to last 2 st, k2. Row 2- knit. Row 3- k2, p to last 2 st, k2. Row 4- k2, m1l, k until 2 st remain, m1r, k2. Repeat rows 3 & 4 1(1, 2, 2, 2, 2) (3, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5) more times. Repeat row 3. Stitch count 36(38, 40, 44, 44, 46) (50, 52, 56) 58, 60, 64, 66)
Joining Under the Arms
In the next row you will be casting on under the arm and joining the 2 sections together. With right side facing, k2, m1l, k until 2 back stitches remain, m1r, k2, c0 1(1, 1, 1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2), pm, C0 1(1, 1, 1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2), k2, m1l, knit until 2 front stitches remain, m1r, k2, c0 1(1, 1, 1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2), place SORM, cO 1(1, 1, 1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2). Stitch count 80(84, 88, 96, 100, 104) (112 116, 124, 128, 132, 140, 144) Round 1- k across back to 2(2, 2, 2, 3, 3) (3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3) st before marker, p 4(4, 4, 4, 6, 6) (6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6) (slip marker as you come to it). K aCross front to 2(2, 2, 2, 3, 3) (3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3) st before SORM, P 2(2, 2, 2, 3, 3) (3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3). Round 2- P 2(2, 2, 2, 3, 3) (3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3)) knit to end of round. Round 3-K until 1(1, 1, 1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2) st before marker, p 2(2, 2, 2, 4, 4) (4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4) (remove marker as you come to it). K across front to 1(1, 1, 1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2) st before SORM, p 1(1, 1, 1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2). Round 4-p 1(1, 1, 1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2), k to end of round. From now on choose size based on the age of your child and knit to that length. Knit 3(4, 4, 4, 5, 5) (5, 5,6, 6, 6, 7, 8) rows
Slip Stitch Band
Round 1- \*k1, p1. Rep from \* to end of round Round 2- \*sl1p, p1. Rep from \* until end of round. Repeat rounds 1 & 2 2(2, 2, 3, 3, 3) (3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4) more times.
Skirt
You will now be knitting around adding 4 stitch markers, this will give you 5 stitch markers total. (including theSoRM) Change to 5mm needle (2 sizes larger than gauge) K 10(10, 10, 12,12, 12) (14, 14, 16, 16, 16, 18, 18) st, Pm, k 20(22, 24, 24, 26, 28) (28, 30, 30, 32, 34, 34, 36) st, pm, k 20(20, 20, 24,24, 24) (28, 28, 32, 32, 32, 36, 36) st, pm, k 20(22, 24, 24, 26, 28) (28, 30, 30, 32, 34, 34, 36) st, pm, k 10(10, 10, 12, 12, 12) (14, 14, 16, 16, 16,18, 18) st to end of round. Round 1-" K to marker, sm, sl1p. Rep from \* 3 more times, k to end of round. Round 2- Knit. Repeat rounds 1 & 2 until dress measures 7/18 (newborn), 7.5/19(8/20.5, 8.5/21.5, 9/23, 9.5/24.5, 10/25.5) (10.5/27, 11.5/29.5, 12.5/32, 13.5/34.5, 14.5/37,16/41, 17.5/44.5) inches/cm from the top of the centre back. Finish after round 1.
Increase Section
Round 3- \*Knit to 1 stitch before marker, kfb, sm, kfb. Repeat from " 3 more times, knit to end of round (8 stitches increased). Round 4- Knit. Round 5- \*Knit to marker, sm, s1p. Repeat from " 3 more times. Knit to end of round. Repeat rounds 3 - 5 until dress measures 11.5/29.5 (newborn), 12.5/32(13.5/34.5, 14.5/37, 16/41, 17/43.5, 18/46) (19.5/49.5,21/53.5,23/58.5, 24.5/62.5, 26/66, 27.5/70, 30/76.5) inches/cm. Choose the length based on the age of the child rather than chest measurement. Measure from the centre back of the neck all the way down to the middle of the back (see picture below). Finish after Round 4.

Hem
Round 1- purl. Round 2- knit. Round 3- purl. Cast off to marker, \*remove marker, cable cast on 2stitches onto left needle (you will still have one stitch remaining on the right needle), cast off to next marker. Repeat from " 3 more times.
Finishing
Sew in ends and block dress, pulling out the points of the skirt as far as they will go (be careful when blocking that you don't over stretch the bodice when stretching out the points of the skirt).
