My Son's School has a lunch-time running club, tuwice a week, called "Roadrunners." Recently, he asked me to make him a Roadrunner. This pattern is the result and has been named after my little roadrunner! Abbreviations used in this pattern: $\mathsf{s c=}$ single crochet dc $=$ double crochet hdc $=$ half-double crochet st $=$ stitch sl st $=$ slip stitch yo $=$ yarn over $\mathsf{B L O=}$ back loops only $\mathsf{F L O=}$ front loops only inc $=$ increase (2 sc in one stitch) dec $=$ decrease (Work 2 stitches together into one sc) ${\sf M C}=$ magic circle (or chain 2, work in second chain from hook) NOTE: The number in paranthesis after each line of pattern is the total number of stitches you should have in at the end of each round.

_Finished dimensions: Approximately 3" wide $\times\,7.5"$ tall, depending on your yarn

· E hook (3.5mm) & D hook $(3.25\mathsf{m m})$ for beak only · Small amounts of worsted weight yarn (model was constructed with Lion Brand's Vanna's Choice yarns) ·9mmSafety Eyes · Polyfill/Stuffing · Yarn needle

Head

Using main body color, work 4 sc in MC 1. Inc in each st around (8) 2. (inc in next st, 1 sc in next) around (12) 3. Repeat round 2 (18) 4. (sc in ext 2 sts, inc in next) around (24) 5-7. Sc around (24) 8. (sc in next 2 sts, dec over next 2) around (18) Position 9mm safety eyes 9. (sc in next st, dec over next 2) around (12) 10. Dec around (6); weave ends through remaining stitches and draw closed tightly. Secure.

Body

Work 6 sc in MC 1. Inc in each st around (12) 2. 4 sc, inc, inc, 4 sc, inc, inc (16) 3. 5 sc, inc 3 times, 5 sc, inc 3 times (22) 4. 3 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc 4 times, 3 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc 4 times (32) 5. 6 sc, inc, 6 sc, inc 3 times, 6 sc, inc, 6 sc, inc 3 times (40) 3-8. Sc around (40) 9. 6 sc, dec 3 times, 6 sc, dec, 6 sc, dec 3 times, 6 sc, dec (32) 10. 3 sc, dec, 3 sc, dec 4 times, 3 sc, dec, 3 sc dec 4 times (22) 11. 5 sc, dec 3 times, 5 sc dec 3 times (16)

Stuff

12. (Squeeze body together and work through both thicknesses) Insert hook under front loop of next st; insert hook under back loop of last st, yo, draw through all loops. Insert hook under front loop of next st; insert hook under back loop of 2nd to last st, yo, draw through allops. Repeat for remaining sts (8); Fasten off

Neck

Ch 12, join into ring with sc, leaving a long tail for sewing 1-2. Sc around (12) 6. 1 sc, dec, 3 sc, dec, 2 sc (8) 3. 4 sc, dec, 4 sc, dec (10) 7-8. Sc around (8); fasten off, leaving tail for 4-5. Sc around (10) sewing; Sew wider end of neck to body; stuff firmly; sew head to top of neck.

Wings (Make 2)

Work 6 sc in MC 1. Inc in each st around (12) 5. hdc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st next st, 2. 6 sc, ch 3, dc, hdc, sc, sc, hdc, dc, ch 3 3 hdc in next st, sl st next, 3 hdc, sl st, hdc, ch 2, fasten off with sl st in same st 4. ch 1, sc across top of wing $\&$ in top of as last hdc; weave ends in ch 3 (7 sc), ch 2 turn

Tail Feathers (Make 3)

1. Ch 15, sc in 2nd ch from hook & across (14) 2. Ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook & next 2 ch, sc in back loop of foundation ch; fasten off

Legs (Make 2)

Starting at the "ankle", with leg color, work 3 sc in MC 1. Inc in each st around (6) 2-11. Sc around (6); fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Feet (Make 2)

Using leg color, ch 6; sl st in 2nd ch from hook & across (first toe made); ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook & across including last ch of first toe (second toe made); ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook & across including last ch of second toe (third toe made); ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hoom and across; fasten with sl st in cen ter of foot (dew claw made), leaving a long tail for sewing.

Beak (use "D" (3.25mm) hook)

Using beak color, ch 2; 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook; fasten off. Fold & sew into a cone shape; sew onto face.

Assembly

Sew feet to ankles; sew legs to bottom of body; sew on wings & tail feathers. To add embellishment to top of head for crown feathers, knot lengths of black yarn along ridge of head, separate strands to make them fuzzy, and trim to desired length.
