Toadstool Family By Knitosophy

I designed these adorable toadstools for my family. My kids absolutely love them. Each is knit in one piece, but they are not stand-alone! I wanted these guys to be true softies that can be thrown around and squeezed to the heart's desire. Enjoy!
SIZES
Baby (Middling, Jumbo) measuring approximately 4.5 (6, 8) inches tall
YARN
Any worsted weight yarn in at least 3 different, contrasting colors: 60 (100, 150) yds (Shown in Malabrigo Merino Worsted in Stone for the stems & gills; Ewe Ewe Yarns Wooly Worsted in Berry, Teal and Orange Peel for the caps; and Plymouth Worsted Merino Superwash in White for the spots)
NEEDLES
Size 5 set of 4 DPNs or circulars 32" long or greater for Magic Loop method
NOTIONS
Stitch marker Yarn needle Polyester fiber fill (or other preferred stuffing)
GAUGE
5 sts & 6 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN
STEM Using stem color CO 6 (9, 9) sts. Rnd 1: PM & join in the rnd. Knit all. Rnd 2: Kfb all sts. (12, 18, 18 sts total) Rnd 3: Knit all. Rnd 4: K1kfb throughout. (18, 27, 27 sts total) Rnd 5: Knit all. Rnd 6: Purl all. Knit 10 rnds. [K4 (7, 7) k2tog] 3 times. (15, 24, 24 sts total) Knit until stem measures approx. 2 (3, 4) inches. GILLS Rnd 1: Purl all. Rnd 2: Kfb all sts. (30, 48, 48 sts total) Rnd 3: Knit all. Rnd 4: K1kfb throughout. (45, 72, 72 sts total) Rnd 5: Knit all. Rnd 6: K2kfb throughout. (60, 96, 96 sts total) Rnd 7: Knit all. Close hole & weave in yarn end from cast on. Stuff stem

For Baby size skip to Rnd 12. Rnd 8: K3kfb throughout. (_, 120, 120 sts total) Rnd 9: Knit all. For Middling size skip to Rnd 12. Rnd 10: K4kfb throughout. (L, \~, 144 sts total) Rnd 11: Knit all. Rnd 12: Purl all. CAP Join in contrasting color for cap. Rnd 1: Knit all. Rnd 2: [K2 (3, 4) k2tog] throughout. (45, 96, 120 sts total) Knit 5 (3, 3) rnds. [K1 (2, 3) k2tog] throughout. (30, 72, 96 sts total) Knit 5 (5, 3) rnds. [K0 (1, 2) k2tog] throughout. (15, 48, 72 sts total) Knit 3 (5, 5) rnds. Weave in ends from joining colors & stuff cap by tearing small pieces of stuffing & rounding out the cap. You will be surprised how much stuffing is needed to fill out the cap, especially for the Jumbo size! Do not cram the Middling and Jumbo sizes full just yet. For Baby size break yarn here. For Middling size k2tog throughout. (24 sts total) Knit 5 rnds. Finish stuffing cap. Break yarn. For Jumbo size [k1, k2tog] throughout. (48 sts total) Knit 5 rnds. K2tog throughout. (24 sts total) Knit 5 rnds. Finish stuffing cap. Break yarn. Thread the yarn end through all remaining sts, pulling tightly. Weave end in & out of the top hole, maintaining constant tension until hole is sufficiently closed. Weave to the inside. SPOTS With a contrasting color, embroider spots onto the cap using duplicate stitch. Weave ends to the inside.
