Irish Crochet Star Flower
By: Melba Vincent
This pattern was recreated from a vintage Irish Crochet Jacket seen in a resale shop in Oakland, CA. The original center was made similar to a spiral. I had some technical help from Maire Treanor while attending a 4 day workshop in Berkeley, CA. These instructions assume you know the basics of Irish Crochet.

Materials Used: Size 30 vintage ecru thread Hook: US 13 steel, 0.95 MM or for whatever size thread you are using. US terminology used. A long piece of thread folded in half, twice, for the padding cord. (PC) Mine was over 40 inches. Instructions: padded double ring - PR 1. 10 sc over the PC, join in 1st sc. 2. 2 sc in each st around, join in 1st sc. Drop the PC. 20 sts.
Petals:
1. Ch 1, sc in the next st. Ch 21, sc in the 4th ch from the hook. 2. \*[Ch 2, skp 2, dc in next st] Five times,\* ch 3, sl st in the last ch, turn the work, and repeat \* to \* on the other side, ch 2, slst in the last ch before the ch 3 loop. 3. 3 sc in ch 3 loop, [ch 2, sl st in the next sp], repeat [to ] before the PR. At the PR, 3 sc on the PR. 4. Repeat steps 1 through 3, four more times finishing with a sl st at the 1st petal. 5. Pick up the PC. Working over it, work 3 sc in each ch 2 sp created in round 2, 2 sc in each sc at the tip, 3 sc in each ch 2 sp down the other side. Skp 1 st at the ring, sl st in the next, skp 1 st . 6. Repeat round 5 four more times ending with a sl st at the 1st petal. 7. Working on the PC alone, \*1 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 hdc, skp 2 spaces from the previous round and sc in the next st. Arch made. Repeat \* to \* twice more. 3 arches on this side. 8. Work the same arch stitch sequence, except sc in the center of the tip, then make another arch and sc at the other side of the tip. 9. Repeat row 7 down the other side, joining with a sl st in between the petals. 10. Repeat rounds 7 through 9, four more times ending with a sl st to the 1 st arch. Fasten off and weave in the ends and extra PC. Lightly steam if needed.
