Instructions
This patten does not contain detailled instructions for heel or toe. Please use your favourite ones. The socks are knited top-down, i.e. starting at the cufand working down to the foot. Certainly they can also be worked toe-up. Cuff: Cast on 60 sts and close to the round being careful not to twist. Then work 2-2 ribbing for 8 rounds. Leg: If you use dpns, divide the stitches on the needles so that each needle holds a multiple of 4 sts (16 - 16 - 16 - 12). For the beacon switch to yellow yarn and work 12 rounds in seed stitch. red, 10 rounds white, 10 rounds red, 10 rounds white, 10 rounds red. Heel: Work your favourite heel over the back 30 sts with black yarn If you do a heelflap heel, work the gusset decrease rounds in black, too. Knit the sts at the sole and do the instep sts in moss stitch. If you do a short row heel continue in black for 10 more rounds after the heel is finished. Knit the sts at the sole and do the instep sts in moss stitch. Foot: Contiue with the variegated yarns, switching colors every second round. The sole sts are always knitted. At the instep purl the first and the last sts and work the ripple pattern (see above) in-between. If you prefer a smoother sea, you may knit the instep sts between the two "selvedge sts" as well. Work 60 rounds (counted from the black part) or until your work is approx. 5 cm (2 inches) shorter than the desired foot length. Toe: Work your favourite toe in color 1936.

Embroidery: After weaving in the loose ends the windows are embroidered in double stitch on the tower using the black yarn. Work columnwise from cuff to heel. The windows are positioned at the center stitch of the k3 ribs. Embroider every third rib (rib 2, 5, 8, 11 and 14 counted from the rear center if you have 60 sts $=15$ ribs around the leg). Vertically the windows are set in rows 3, 9, 15, 21, 27, 33, 39 and 45 counted from the thin black stripe at the top. Weave in ends.
Suggestions for Variations:
- For children's socks leave out the embroidery so that the tiny toes will not get caught in strands. - Adapt the stripes at the tower to the recipient's personal favourite lighthouse. - Mark a stitch at the tower and cross it over its left neighbor every second round to create a spiral staircase around the tower. - Work the foot in a solid yarn in medium blue. - At the beacon knit every third row in black and slip approx. every 6th stitch in the yellow rows to create a black lattice over yellow background. Enjoy knitting! Ahoy! Andrea KruB-Anders (Drea)
