SQUARE WAVE
By John Horigan Chinese Waves stitch worked from the center. Finished Size: typically 8 to 10 inches on side. Yarn: 50g Lily Sugar 'n Cream yarn or equivalent worsted-weight "kitchen" cotton. Needles: Set of 5 size US 7 (4.5mm) double pointed needles (dpns). US 7 circular needle, 40" or longer. Notions: crochet hook size G or H, tapestry needle, three stitch markers. Gauge: 18 sts/4" in pattern.
Stitch Guide:
kok - Knit, yarn-over, knit into the same stitch.
Pattern:
Cast-on 8 sts. onto the crochet hook using Emily Ocker's Circular Cast-On. Distribute sts. onto four dpns and begin knitting: round 1: Knit half the sts. on the dpn, kok, knit to end of dpn. Repeat for other dpns. round 2: [p1, sl1], repeat to end round round 3: Repeat round 1 round 4: [sl1, p1], repeat to end round Repeat rounds 1 to 4 until the dishcloth is the desired size, ending after an odd round. Switch to the circular needle and use the "traveling loop" technique when the work is too large for dpns. Place the stitch markers to mark where the dpn joins were. Bind-off, pull the center ring snug, and weave in ends. NB: when slipping stitches make sure that the yarn remains in front. On the even rounds the center of the kok stitch will always be purled, never slipped.
