REVERSIBLE BRAIDED COWL
Cozy and elegant reversible cowl/scarf with a cable braid pattern. For the pictured cowl, I used a thick, soft 100 % cotton yarn: Rauma Pt Helarsgarn, on needle Us 8 (5 mm). My gauge with this yarn was approx. 13 sts in 4 inches. I also recommend Hexa by Du Store Alpakka (1o0 % alpaca) or Puno by Rauma, (both bulky yarns) knitted on needle US 11 (8 mm). Gauge: 13 sts in 4 “inches The cowl is worked flat. The center braid are surrounded by 7 garter stitches. These garter sts are created by knitting plain back and forth (knit sts) on the needle. The cable braid consists of 18 sts (3 x 6 stitches), and the cables alternate between twisting left and right The cables are twisted on every 4th round. The trick: To make the braid reversible, the sts in the cable (only) must be knitted every other knit and purl, that is: knit one, purl one - repeated through the whole cable, also on the backside. ... In this way the knit stitches will define the braid, so the cables must have even numbers. Cast on 32 stitches- Start knitting back and forth on the needle like this: - Row 1: Knit 7 sts, then: \*purl one, knit one \* repeat (all 18 sts in the cable) - then knit 7 sts. - Row 2: Knit 7 sts, then: \* purl one, knit one\* repeat (all 18 sts in the cable) - then knit 7 sts. - Row 3: Knit 7 sts, then: \* purl one, knit one\* repeat (all 18 sts in the cable) - then knit 7 sts. - Row 4: CABLE TWIST ROW: Knit 7 sts, then twist the cable to the right: Slip 6 sts in the back, knit the next 6 sts, then the slipped 6 sts - always knitting every other st in the cable "knit one, purl one". - Row 5: Knit 7 sts, then: \*purl one, knit one \* repeat (all 18 sts in the cable) - then knit 7 sts. - Row 6: Knit 7 sts, then: \*purl one, knit one \* repeat (all 18 sts in the cable) - then knit 7 sts. - Row 7: Knit 7 sts, then: \*purl one, knit one \* repeat (all 18 sts in the cable) - then knit 7 sts. - Row 8: CABLE TWIST ROW: Knit 7 sts, then twist the cable to the left: Slip 6 sts in the front, knit the next 6 sts, then the slipped 6 sts - always knitting every other st in the cable "knit one, purl one". Continue repating this pattern, till you have the length you want. Bind off, and seam the bind off ends together. Happy knitting :)

Garter stitches - Every other knit+purl - garter stitche Right leaning cable: Slip 6 stitches in the back, knit the next 6, then the 6 slipped stitches. Left leaning cable: Slip 6 stitches in the front, knit the next 6, then the 6 slipped stitches.
