Felted Mittens with Multi-Colored Cuff Advanced Beginner Skill Level 2 Sizes to fit Teenagers & Adults Worsted Weight Wool Yarn - NOT Superwash
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOOLS?
design by Amy E. Anderson I can get really nostalgic about the idea of an oldfashioned Christmas - and that's when I decide that everyone should get a pair of hand-knit mittens. Felting makes them warm and windproof and the bright colors and tassels cheer me up when winter skies turn grey. The multi-colored pattern is created with a slip stitch, so you only work with one color at a time. This merino yarn is very soft and felts easily. Directions are given for 2 sizes. The smaller size will fit older children. The larger size is for adults. Gauge is not really important; you can adjust the size in the felting process. If only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. Materials: Jo Sharp's $100\%$ wool 107 yds per 50 gram ball. 2 balls of Color A 1 ball each of Color B and C Alternate Yarn Choices: Dale Heilo, Cascade 220 Needles: Size 7, double-pointed
Mosaic Stitch (even # of stitches):
Rd 1: With Color C, $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}$ , slip $1^{\star}$ , rep \*\*. Rd 2: With Color C, knit. Rd 3: With Color B, \*slip 1, K1\*, rep \*-\* Rd 4: With Color B, knit. Repeat Rows 1-4 for pattern.
Directions:
With Color B, cast on 48 (52) sts. Divide work on 4 needles as follows: 12 (13) sts on each needle. Join and purl 5 (6) rounds. Note: These purl rounds form the piping around the bottom of the cuff - this rolled edge must be sewn shut to form a tube before felting. Knit 1 rd. Work 26 (30) rounds in Mosaic Stitch. With Color B, knit 1 rd. Purl 5 (6) rds. Note: These purl rounds form a piping at the top of the cuff. You can cut Colors B & C at this point. Switch to Color A and knit 6 (8) rds.
Begin Thumb Gusset:
Rd. 1: Knit 23 (25), inc 1 in each of the next 2 sts by knitting in front and back of st, K to end of rd. Rd. 2 and All Even Numbered Rounds: Knit Rd. 3: Knit 23 (25), inc 1 in the next st, K2, inc 1 in the next st, K to end of rd. Rd. 5: Knit 23 (25), inc 1 in the next st, K4, inc 1 in the next st, K to end of rd. Rd. 7: Knit 23 (25), inc 1 in the next st, K6, inc 1 in the next st, K to end of rd. Continue working increases on odd numbered rds, adding 2 more sts between the increases each time, until you have a total of 66 (72) sts. Separate Thumb Row: Knit 24 (26) sts, slip the next 18 (20) sts to scrap yarn and set aside for thumb, knit to end of round. Note: Make sure you have 12 (13) sts on each needle. Knit for $3\%^{3}\,(4\%^{31})$ above the crook of the thumb. Begin decreases as follows: Rd. 1: $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ Needle: K1, K2tog, K to end of needle. $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ Needle:K to last 3 sts, K2tog,K1 $3^{\mathsf{r d}}$ Needle:K1,K2tog,K to end of neee. $4^{\mathrm{th}}$ Needle: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. Rd. 2: Knit Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until 12 sts remain. Next rd: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}2\mathsf{t o g}^{\star}$ , repeat \*\* to end of rd. Draw remaining 6 sts together and tie off.
Thumb:
Divide the 18 (20) thumb sts onto 3 needles. Knit for 14 (16) rounds. Next 2 rds: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}2\mathsf{t o g}^{\star}$ , repeat \*\* to end of round. Draw yarn through the remaining 5 sts and draw together.
Finishing:
Weave in ends. You want to sew the pipings shut, making each into a tube. To do this, thread yarn on a darning needle, turn mitten inside out and grab the purl bumps of Color B on each side of the groove, and draw them together. Note: Felting is caused primarily by agitation. You may need to wash your mittens 2-3 times in hot water before they shrink enough. Try stopping your washer before it gets to the rinse cycle, then reset it to go through the wash cycle again, if necessary. When still wet, you can stretch or shape mittens to fit your hands. Dry your mittens by standing them up over a drinking glass or bottle.
Braided Trim:
With a double strand of each color, make a braid 15" (16") long, leaving a $\%"$ tassel at each end. After mitten is felted and dried, pin braid onto mitten, just above the top piping, so that the tassels are at the outside edge. Baste the braid in place with needle and thread.
