?Cast-on 14 stitches on each needle using a figure eight cast on, thus 28 stitches total. ·Knit 1 row plain. Increase row: K1, yo, knit to 1 stitch before end, yo, k1, repeat on next needle, 4 stitches increased. Knit 1 row plain, knitting into the back of yo's. Repeat these 2 rows to a total of 60 stitches. Note: Make the increases as a yarn over after the first knit stitch and again before the last knit stitch on each needle (k1, yo, knit to 1 stitch before end, yo, k1). Then on the plain row, knit into the back of the yarn overs to twist the stitches and avoid a hole. This technique does not tighten other stitches and it tells you if you are on an increase or plain row. A row begins at the side of the foot, beginning with the sole stitches.

Part Two Forefoot

Change yarn if you wish. · Knit plain on 60 sts until the length is just past the ball of your foot (try the sock on to be sure).

Part Three Arch Mid-foot

Pattern illustration

Change yarn if you wish. If you do not want a shaped arch, then continue knitting plain on 60 stitches until the sock is 2 inches shorter than the length of your foot from toe to heel (stand on a ruler with your heel against a wall to measure). To make a shaped arch, continue as follows. Knit 3 rows plain. Knitting across what will be the sole of your sock, increase 1 stitch at each end (k1, yo, knit to 1 stitch before end, yo, k1) then knit across the instep - 32 stitches on the sole and 30 stitches on the instep needle. Knit 1 row plain, knitting into the back of yo's. Again, increase 1 stitch at either end of the sole, and knit across the instep - 34 stitches on the sole and 30 stitches on the instep needle. Knit 1 row plain, knitting into the back of yo's. You have increased the width of the sole by 4 stitches because the upcoming arch shaping will narrow the width of the sole. The arch is shaped by decreasing 2 stitches at the centre of the sole while at the same time increasing 1 stitch on each side of the sole, as follows beginning with the 34 sole stitches: · K1, yo, k 13, k2tog, k2, ssk, k13, yo, k1, knit across 30 instep stitches. · Knit 1 row plain, knitting into the back of yo's. Repeat the shaping and plain rows until the sock is 2 inches shorter than the length of your foot from toe to heel.

Part Four Gusset

Change yarn if you wish. centre decreases but continue the alternate row increases on the sole. K1, yo, knit to 1 stitch before end, yo, k1, then knit across the instep. Knit 1 row plain, knitting into the back of yo's. Continue until there are 56 sts on the sole (4 sts less than the original total) and still 30 stitches on the instep.

Change yarn if you wish. Note that changing yarn makes it much easier to find the row to pick up along the back for your knitted hem. Knit 14 plain rows. Make a picot turning edge by knitting 1 row of \*yo, k2tog\* around. If you find this too “frilly" then purl 1 row for a plain turning edge. Knit 13 rows plain. Using another needle, working on the wrong side of the sock, pick up the back bump of each stitch from the first row of the cuff and knit it together loosely with a stitch from the needle, and cast off as you go.
