The Story of Lilian:
In Jan 2016, I knit my first (wearable) sweater, the Lila pullover, by Carrie Bostick Hoge. Halfway through knitting it, I knew I had a wool in my stash that would go so well with that sweater. So I grabbed my Tarndie polworth in this lovely dusty rose colour and cast on. The garter edge is inspired by Lila, and the versatile shape means the Lilian can be worn slouchy, straight up on your head, or cuffed! It's all about simple style to complement your outfit.
Instructions
Using the 4mm (US 6) circulars, cast on 90 stitches, use the long tail cast on method. Join stitches in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches, use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Garter Border
Round 1: knit all stitches Round 2: purl all stitches Continue round 1 and 2 until piece measures 2.5 in (6.4 cm) from cast-on edge, ending on a purl row.
Body
Knit all rounds in stockinette stitch until the hat measures 8 in (20.3 cm) from the cast-on edge.
Shaping the Crown
Change to DPNs as necessary, or use Magic Loop method alternatively. Round 1: \*k8, k2tog\* rpt \*\* to end of round (9 stitches decreased, 81 stitches remaining) Round 2: knit all stitches Round 3: \*k7, k2tog\* rpt \*\* (9 stitches decreases, 72 stitches remaining) Round 4: knit all stitches Round 5: \*k6, k2tog\* rpt \* \* to end of round (9 decreased, 63 remaining) Round 6: knit all stitches Round 7: \*k5, k2tog\* rpt\* \* to end of round (9 decreased, 54 remaining) Round 8: knit all stitches Round 9: \*k4,k2tog\* rpt\* \* to end of round (9 decreased, 45 remaining) Now, continue with only the decrease rounds (omit the knit rounds in between) Round 10: \*k3,k2tog\* rpt\* \* to end of round (9 decreased, 36 remaining) Round 11: \*k2,k2tog\* rpt\* \* to end of round (9 decreased, 27 remaining)
Finishing
Leave a 15 inch (38cm) tail of yarn, attach a darning needle, thread the tail of the yarn through the 27 live stitches on your needs, and cinch the top of the hat shut. Weave in ends. Gently block your hat keeping the garter edge tight. Now it's ready-to-wear! Special thanks to the Close Knit Pattern Testers: Amelia Anna G. Anna H.
