Cleo at the Wheel: A Unique Banana-Shaped Shawl Knitting Pattern with Detailed Instructions and Beading

Cleo al lhe uheel- english versic by edith filzhof design

A “banana-shaped" shawl, particularly suitable for hand dyed yarns that develop their colorfulness in the stockinette stitch part in the centre. I used a matching solid yarn and beads for the openwork as well as for the leave border

Yarn: all in all, ca.100g/3,53 ounces of sock yarn (400 m/437 yards) (e.g. baby alpaca, cashmere-silk or regular sock yarn) For the shawl in the picture: 58g/2,05 ounces of hand dyed cashmere-silk black-red and 42g/1,48 ounces of cashmere-silk solid "Dahlia", 437 yards/3,53 ounces) and 20g/0,71 ounces/ 1000 pieces of Tohu beads 8/0 or other matching Rocailles. Needle: size 4,0/US 6 or the needle you like. Stitch test is not necessary, but make sure you are using matching needles. Please read the whole pattern before you get started. The shawl is knit starting at the neck, growing downwards. Cast on 3 stitches and knit 10 rows (= 5 “ribs") in garter stitch. Now pick stitches from every rib (purl row) along the left side (= 5 stitches) and additionally 3 from the stitches you casted on. Now you have got 11 stitches on the needle (forming a small semicircle). Row 1: edge stitch, knit 2, yo, purl 5, yo, knit 2, edge stitch = 12 stitches Row 2: edge st, knit 2, yo, knit 3, yo, knit 1, yo, knit 3, yo, knit 2, edge stitch = 17 stitches Row 3: edge st, knit 2, yo, purl till only 3 stitches remain on left needle, then yo, knit 2, edge stitch Row 4: edge st, k2, yo, k till center st, yo, k1 (center stitch), yo, k till only 3 sts remain on left needle, yo, k2, edge stitch. Repeat rows 3 and 4 continuously till you have 241 stitches on the needle. Attention: in the odd rows (right side) yarn-overs have to be knit at the edges AND at the center stitch, while in the even rows (wrong side) 1 yo has to be knit at the edges only! Please purl the yo on the wrong side/even rows.

Now you continue with the openwork part; I chose a solid yarn for this. The edge stitches and center stitches are continued as well as the yarn-ons! The openwork consists of 12 rows (=6 “holes"). Odd rows: \*yo, knit2together\* till center stich, from the center stich:\* ssk, yo\* Even rows: purl Details: Row 1 (right side): edge stitch, k2, yo (= rim), k1, then \*yo, k2tog\*.. repeat till stitch before center stitch, yo, k1 (=center stitch), yo, now " ssk, yo\* repeat till one stitch before edge stitch, k1, then the rim: yo, k2, edge stitch. Row 2 (wrong side): edge stitch, k2, yo (= rim), purl till rim, yo, k2, edge stitch Rows 3, 5, like row 1... Rows 4,6: like row 2. If you like, you can add beads to the stitches that have been knit together in the previous row. (Use a crochet needle or a piece of dental silk (floss). I used about ca. 1000 TOHU beads 8/0. :he basic color (continue rim like before).. all in all there are 279 stitches on the needle now.
