Holiday Mystery Gifts 7 x 7 Squares - WASP'S NEST
By Terry Liann Morris Slipped stitches draw up the fabric to create this pattern similar to a wasp's nest. It looks more complicated than it is to knit as you will only work with one color of yarn per row. Because the slipped stitch pattern creates such a dense fabric, more stitches, and yarn are needed for this square than the other squares.
Materials
Worsted weight washable yarn in two contrasting colors: Color A: Accent Color (white in sample) Color B: Background Color (red in sample)

US size 7 $(4.5\mathsf{m m})$ needles or size needed to obtain gauge Size: $7^{\prime\prime}$ square Gauge: 4.9 (6) sts $\v{r}=\v{1^{\prime\prime}}$ over total square Note: Because worsted weight yarns vary so much in actual size and our goal is to make a $7^{\prime\prime}$ square with a flexible fabric, you can choose the gauge and number of stitches to cast on for your best results. Cast on 34 (42) stitches using Color A and the Long-Tail(aka Sling-shot) cast on method. Work border as follows: Row 1: Knit Rows 2 & 3: Slip 1 purlwise, knit to end of row Begin pattern stitch. Use the line-by-line instructions and/or chart below.
Wasp's Next Pattern Stitch:
NOTE: All slipped stitches are worked as if to purl with the yarn on the wrong side of the square. Do not cut yarns, but instead carry them along the side,"catching" the unused Color B. Take care to keep the Color B strand on the side the same tension/length of the knitting - do not pulltight. Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, with Color B, k3, [slip 2, k6] 3(4) times, slip 2, k4 Row 2 (Ws): Slip 1, k3, [slip 2, p6] 3(4) times, slip 2, k4 Row 3: Same as Row 1 Row 4: Same as Row 2 Row 5: Same as Row 1 Row 6: Same as Row 2 Row 7: Slip 1, with Color A, knit to the end of the row Row 8: Same as Row 7 Row 9: Slip 1, with Color B, k7, [slip 2, k6] 2(3) times, slip 2, k8 @Copyright Terry Liann Morrs, 2008 Questions?
