Breda's Cowl: Free Crochet Pattern with Stripes and Luxurious Yarns

BREDA'S COWL

YARN: The Fibre Co. Road to China Light (65% baby alpaca, 15% silk, 10% camel, 10% cashmere; 159 yards/50 gm skein): lapis (MC), blue tourmaline (CC1), citrine (CC2), 1 skein each. GAUGE: 17 sts and 11 rnds = 4" (10 cm) in double crochet. NoTioNs: Stitch marker, tapestry needle. SIzE: 20" (50.75 cm) circumference, 14" (35.5 cm) height. SKILLs: Single and double crochet, increasing and decreasing.

WORTHY OF NOTE

You can mark your beginning of round with a removable locking marker (or coiless safety pin) to be sure that your stitch count remains consistent. Move the marker every round to attach it to the chain at the beginning of the round.

STITCH PATTERN

DOUBLE CROCHET STRIPE PATTERN:

Rnd 1 (Mc) : Ch2, dc into each st to end of rnd, work sl st into top of ch 2 from beg of rnd. Do not cut yarn. Rnd 2 (cc1): Ch2, dc into each st to end of rnd, work sl st into top of ch 2 from beg of rnd. Do not cut yarn. Rnd 3 (cc2): Ch2, dc into each st to end of rnd, work sl st into top of ch 2 from beg of rnd. Do not cut yarn. Rep Rnds 1-3 for patt.

DIRECTIONS

Using MC, Ch 78 sts. Join for working in the rnd, placing marker on first st of rnd.

SET UP:

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc 77 to end of rnd, work a sl st in ch at beg of rnd -78 sts. Work 2 more rnds of sc in this manner. Rnd 4 (Inc): Ch1, sc 4, work 2 sc in next st, \*sc 5, work 2 sc in next st; rep from \* to end of rnd, work sl st into ch from beg of rnd - 91 sts.

BEGIN STRIPE:

Work Rnds 1-3 of Double Crochet Stripe Pattern 13 times, then Rnd 1 once more, loosely floating the colors up the inside of the work as you need them. Next Rnd (Dec): Ch1, sc4, sk1, \*sc5, sk1; rep from \* to end, work sl st into ch 1 from beg of rnd - 78 sts. Work 3 rnds of sc in MC. Fasten off.

FINISHING:

Weave in ends. Using an iron on medium heat, steam pieces to even stitches.
