
Herzchen is the German diminutive for \*heart which is also used for very lovely persons. These fingerless mittens and hat show that the wearer is such a lovely person. Their cute heart shaped colourwork stands for love and friendship. Each project can be knit up in a few days. Warms the ears and wrists as well as the hearts.
Materials:
Needles: a set of 2.5mm (US Size 1.5) DPNs or circular needle depending on your favorite method of working in the round. Yarn: Fingering weight yarn. Hat and Mitts shown in size M in Karen Noe Design Shetland Wool (100% wool, 220m/241yds per 50g skein) in Aquamarine (MC) and Iris (CC). Mitts shown in size S in Mondial Extrafine Superwash (100% merino, 175m/ 191yds per 50g ball) in grey (MC) and la droguerie surnaturelle (100% wool, 175m/191yds per 50g skein) in caudron (CC). Hat approx. 87 (95, 104)m/80 (87, 95)yds MC; 50 (55, 60)m/46 (50, 55) yds CC. Notions: 1 stitch holder, stitch markers, tapestry needle to weave in ends. Gauge: 24 sts x 36 rounds = 10 x 10cm/ 4 x 4" in heart pattern. Join to work in the rnd being careful not to twist. Pm to mark beginning of rnd and arrange sts evenly. Ribbing Rnds 1 - 5 (MC): [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Rnds 6 - 8 (alternating MC and CC every st): [K1 in MC, p1 in CC] to end of rnd. Rnds 9 - 12 (MC): [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Body Begin stranded colourwork using the charts on page 3. Rnds 13 - 40: Work rnds 1 - 14 of Chart A: Heart Pattern twice. Rnds 41 - 61: Work rnds 1 - 21 of Chart B: Gusset Increases. Rnd 62 (MC): K2, put the next 15 sts on a stitch holder, cast on 1 st, k to end. Rnds 63 - 70: Work rnds 2 - 9 of Chart A: Heart Pattern. Ribbing Rnd 71 (MC): [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Rnds 72 - 74 (alternating MC and CC every st): [K1 in MC, p1 in CC] to end of rnd. Rnds 75 - 77 (MC): [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Bind off all sts knitwise. Thumb Put the 15 held sts back on needles.

With MC cast on 100 (110, 120) sts. Join to work in the rnd being careful not to twist. Pm to mark beginning of rnd and arrange sts evenly. Ribbing Rnds 1 - 5 (MC): [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Rnds 6 - 8 (alternating MC and CC every st): [K1 in MC, p1 in CC] to end of rnd. Rnds 9 - 13 (MC): [K1, p1] to end of rnd. Begin stranded colourwork using the charts on page 3. Rnds 14 - 27: Work rnds 1 - 14 of Chart A: Heart Pattern. Rnds 28 - 34: Work rnds 1 - 7 of Chart A: Herat Pattern. Rnds 35 - 54: Work rnds 1 - 20 of Chart D: Hat Decreases. Break yarn leaving a 10cm / 4" long tail. Thread through the remaining stitches using a tapestry needle and weave in all ends. Block. Remember to twist both strands on the back of your work when you knit more than 4 sts in one colour to prevent long floats that will catch your fingers.
