Breast Cancer Awareness Tam
Designed by Donna Frost Ritchie You see them everywhere - pink ribbons and awareness slogans. I considered knitting a hat that looked like a boob, and put "Feel your boobies" on it. But that's someone else's slogan, not mine. Take time to check your breasts monthly, take good care of yourself and be aware of your body. I lost my nerve for the plain, naked breast, so I added the pink ribbons to the crown to disguise it a little. Enjoy!

Instructions
Cast On:
Fingering weight JaggerSpun 2/8 Maine Line wool: Petal Pink - Magenta Snow White Using the size 2 circular needle and the pink, cast on 160 sts. Join, being mindful not to twist the stitches. Place marker. Knit 3 rounds with pink.
Ribbing:
Needles:
16" circular size 2\* 16" circular size 3\* Set of size 3\* double point needles \* Adjust your needle size as necessary to obtain proper gauge. Join magenta and follow the Corrugated Rib chart. If you like to carry one color in each hand, it may be easiest to carry the purling color in the right hand and the knitting color in the left.
Body:
Gauge:
7 to 8 stitches per inch on the larger needles. Knit 5 plain rounds in pink, increasing 20 stitches (to 180 stitches) in the fifth round. This can be done by increasing one stitch after every 8th stitch. Change to the larger size circular needle and work the Ribbon chart.
Measurements:
Ribbing circumference: 19" Hat height: 9" Work 5 rounds of pink. Using magenta and white work the Body charts. Start with row 1 in Chart A and continue to row 1 in Chart B and then row 1 in Chart C to complete the round.
Notes:
When changing colors, leave about a four inch tail of each color to be knotted together. After tying the knots, trim the tails to about one inch. For the next round, move to row 2 of Chart A and follow the Chart A, Chart B, Chart C sequence staying on row 2 in each chart. Move up one row for each new round and the words "Take Time, Take Care, Be Aware" will form around the hat. Next, work 5 rounds of pink. Then work the Ribbon chart again Work 5 rounds of pink, increasing 2 stitches in the 5th round.

Crown:
Work the Crown chart. Important! The rounds for the crown begin in the center of the chart atthe arrowrather thanat thecentered doubledecreases. To work the centered double decreases, slip 2 stitches together knitwise, knit next stitch and pass 2 slipped stitches over the knitted stitch.
Finishing:
When the decreases are finished, break the yarn, leaving an 8-10" tail. Run this tail through the last few stitches several times, gathering them up. On the inside of the hat, knot together pairs of ends where color changes occurred. Trim to about an inch and leave them hanging. They will felt together when worn if the yarn is 100% wool, (not superwash wool). If a washable wool or acrylic yarn is used, it is best to weave in the ends. At the lower edge, to prevent ends from showing outside the hat while worn, hide the ends by weaving them in. To block the hat, begin by wetting it. Press all the excess moisture out with a towel and shape the hat over a bowl Or plate to dry.
