A for Apple, B for Ball, C for car Cube BY FIONAKELLY This knitted cube toy is an ideal project for a beginner to make. It is simple & easy to knit & embroider. Each letter and picture motif is duplicate stitch embroidered (UK Swiss Darn) onto a single colour knitted square. To ensure the finished cube has flat stable sides & keeps its shape I suggest using foam precut to the required size inside rather than loose stuffing. This is a simple and delightful toy that any precious new arrival will treasure, love & have many hours of fun with over the years.
Materials Needed
Aran (worsted) weight cube 6 x 6inches ( $15\times$ 15cms)
$1\times50\mathfrak{g}$ balls each in Navy, Apple Green & Red Aran (worsted) weight cotton or similar yarn. 1 Pair of 4mm knitting needles $1\,\,\mathsf{x}$ cube of foam for stuffing measuring $6\times6\times6$ inches $15\times15\times15\mathrm{cms})$
Double knitting (sport) weight cube $\mathsf{5}~\mathsf{x}$ 5inches( $12.5\times12.5\mathrm{cms})$
$1\times50\mathfrak{g}$ balls each in Navy, Apple Green & Red Double Knit (sport) weight cotton or similar yarn. 1 x cube of foam for stuffing measuring $5\times5\times5$ inches $12.5\times12.5\times12.5c m s)$ 1 Pair of $3.5\mathsf{m m}$ knitting needles
4Ply (fingering) weight cube $\pmb{4}\pmb{x}$ 4inches ( $70\times10\mathrm{cms})$
$1\times50\dot{\mathfrak{g}}$ balls each in Navy, Apple Green & Red 4Ply weight cotton or similar yarn. 1 x cube of foam for stuffing measuring $4\times4\times4$ inches ( $10\times10\times$ 10cms) 1 Pair of 3mm knitting needles
Plus
1 x Bodkin or blunt ended darning needle, $1\,\,\mathsf{x}$ Pair scissors, $1\,\,\mathsf{x}$ Row counter (optional) Gauge - stocking stitch over 10x10cms (4x4inches) Note these tensions are using $0.5\mathsf{m m}$ thinner needles than normal for the weight of the yarns so the foam stuffing inside the cube is less visable. The yarn ball bands will show less rows and sts per 10cms Aran weight yarn & 4mm needles $=$ 20sts x 27rows eg Debbie Bliss Eco Fairtrade Aran $100\%$ Cotton DK weight yarn & 3.5mm needles $=$ 23sts x 32rows eg Rico $100\%$ Cotton essentials DK 4Ply weight yarn & 3mm needles $=$ 29sts $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{x}}$ 40rows eg Patons $100\%$ Cotton 4 ply
Instructions for knitted squares
Complete all 6 squares shown below as per their individual pattern sheets. Each 50g ball will be enough to knit 2 plain squares of every colour & complete your duplicate stitch (UK Swiss Darn) embroidery on every side of the cube before sewing up.
Sewing Instructions for cube

Lay out your 6 finished squares as per the photos above. With right sides together neatly join them following the stitching lines marked on the chart below left taking care not to distort the size of the square with either stretching or bunching. A small mattress stitch using any long tails of yarn still attached from casting on & off (where possible) works well. Secure any yarn ends and trim them to about 1 inch (2.5mm).

Following the diagram above right & keeping right sides together neatly mattress stitch sides 1a to 1b, 2a to 2b, 3a to 3b & 4a to 4b. With right sides facing outside Insert precut foam cube stuffing before closing up your cube by sewing remaining cube seams 5a to 5b, 6a to 6b. Make sure to secure and trim any loose ends of seams 5a/b & 6a/b before you finish sewing seam 7a to 7b. Secure the yarn tail and neaten before trimming. Your A for Apple, B for Ball, C for Car Cube is now finished!
