Dicker Keltischer Zopf
(by cdknuddel)

A thick and cuddly pair of socks with a Cable! The cable is inspired by Celtic Knots. The pattern is not only for thick socks, it can also be worked with simple 4 - ply Sockyarn. The cable is worked on the outer front of the leg. It means, by working with dpns, the cable is worked on Needle 2 for the right sock and on Needle 3 for the left sock.
Yarn:
Sockyarn 4 - ply (worked with 1 strand or 2 strands together), 6 - ply (1 strand is worked) or 8 - ply (1 strand is worked) Used in example: Zwerger Garn OPAL 4 - ply (2 strands worked together) Size: EU Shoesize 41 For bigger or smaller sizes you could cast on 7 stitches more or fewer.
Materials:
Needlesize: 4,0 - 4,5 mm; In example used 4,0 mm dpns ●1 set of dpns or 1 - 2 circs 1 Crochet Hook in Needle size 1 or 2 balls Sockyarn 4 - ply (each with 420m / 100g), 1 ball Sockyarn 6 - ply (420m / 150g) or 1 ball Sockyarn 8 - ply (420m / 200 g) 2 Safety Pins 1 Tapestry Needle 1Row counter or 2 pieces of yarn in contrasting colour to count the rows (every 1o" row slip the thread around the first stitch on needle 1) 1 Cableneedle

In the next row slip first stitch knit wise, knit 1 row of and divide all stitches evenly on 4 dpns or 2 circs, knit last stitch with first (slipped) stitch together to join in the round (be careful not to twist the work), 52 stitches should be remaining! Now work Ribbing (k3 / p1) for 15 Rounds or to desired cuff length. Increase in the last Round of Ribbing evenly up to 64 stitches.

Leg
Now the stitches have to be rearranged. For the back of the leg 16 stitches on Needle 1 + 4 each. For the front of the Leg (Needle 2 + 3) the stitches are divided as follows: on the Needle were the cable is worked we need 18 Stitches and the rest of the stitches (14 stitches) goes on the Other Needle. Please note that for the right and for the left Sock exists each a Chart A (the Cable pattern) and a Chart B (the basic pattern) Chart A is worked from R 1 - 15 one time, then repeat the R 6 to 15 until approx. 2 cm before desired leg length now work R 16 - 20 one time. The Chart A is worked for the left sock on Needle 3, for the right sock on Needle 2 and the rest of the stitches is worked in basic pattern (Chart B) Left sock Chart A (Cable) Needle 3

Instep:
The sole stitches (Nd. 1 + 4) are always knitted stitches! The Instep, on needle 2 and 3, are worked in Pattern (Chart A for the Cable and Chart B for the basic pattern) Cart A is worked as follows: R1 - 15 one time, R 6 - 15 until approx. 5 cm before the desired foot length is reached. In example for EU Shoe size 41 are 46 R worked.
Toe:
Work toe as follows or every shape of toe that you like!
To set up for the toe, the stitches have to be rearranged. Slip 2 stitches from Needle 2 to Needle 1 and 2 stitches from Needle 3 to Needle 4 Also divide the remaining instep stitches evenly between the Needles 2 + 3 Now each Needle should hold 14 stitches! R 1 (decrease round): Nd. 1 + 3: k to 3 sts before end of Needle - k2tog - k1 Nd.2 + 4: k1 - k2togtbl - k rem. sts R 2 (plain round): Nd. 1 - 4: k all sts Repeat R 1 + 2 until 9 stitches remain on every Needle. Now repeat R 1 until 4 sts remain on every Needle. Knit the stitches on Needle 1 again (without decreasing), now the Yarn is at the side of the foot.
Close the Sock
Slip all remaining Instep stitches on one safety pin (close it!) and the remaining sole stitches on the second safety pin (close it!). Break Yarn, leaving at least a 10 Inch long tail. Now turn the Sock inside out. Slip the stitches from the first safety pin on one dpn and the stitches from the second safety pin on a second dpn. Close the sock with Three - Needle - Bind - Off. Hold one dpn behind the second in left hand and with a third dpn in right hand knit the first stitch from both left hand dpns together, repeat with the next stitch of both left hand needle, now lift the first worked stitch from right hand needle over second worked stitch - 1 stitch remains on right hand needle. Work all remaining stitches from left hand needles in the same manner until only one stitch remains on right hand needle. Pull remaining tail of yarn through last stitch and pull tight! Wave in the ends (on cuff and toe) and work second sock. If used, pull the counting thread when the second sock is finished.

Happy knitting!
Dear knitter, because my English is out of the school, it is not very good, I try my best to translate my German patterns for the English speaking community on Ravelry. If you find any errors, or if you have any questions about the pattern, or if it is not understandable, please feel free to contact me over PM on Ravelry (my user name is cdknuddel ) so that I could learn and correct my errors! Thanks in advance for your help! Greets Claudia
