Suppplies:
Any worsted weight yarn approx. 3 oz Size US 10-1/2 needles (Instructions for straight and circular needles given) If using circular needles, you will also need a set of 10-1/2 DP needles for crown 5 split ring markers (or you can use scraps of waste yarn - as long as they are removable) Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends) Gauge: (Is not tremendously important but you want to be in the general area) In stocking stitch: 4-1/4" per inch This pattern is designed to be stretchy and will fit most teenagers and adults.
Straight Needle Directions:
Beginning at bottom, C0 72 sts. Place marker in st 9, 24, 49 and 64 (Note : markers will remain in this row - not be moved as you work.) Work in garter st (knit every row) for 1-1/2' Change to SS (knit one row/purl one row) until hat measures 5" from beginning of work
Decreasing for crown:
Row 1: \*K6, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 2: Purl (on this and all even numbered rows) Row 3: \*K5, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 5: Knit across all stitches Row 7: \*K4, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 9: \*K3, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 11: \*K2, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 13: \*K1, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 15: \*K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 16: Purl across. Break yarn leaving a long tail for sewing. 'ough remaining stitches and pulltight to secure. Sew back seam and weave in enc
Earflap 1:

Earflap 2:
Same as earflap 1, but pickup stitches from the 3rd to the 4th marker.
Finishing:
You can add 8"-10" of i-cord or braid to the bottom of each earflap if desired. (Braid can be made by using 36" lengths of yarn, braided to 10", knotted and leaving 1" of fringe.)
Circular Needle Directions:
Beginning at bottom, CO 72 sts. Place marker in st 9, 24, 49 and 64 (Note : These markers will remain in this row - not be moved as you work.) After last stitch, place a marker that will be moved and designates end of row. Work in garter st (K1 row, P 1 row) for 1-1/2" Change to SS (knit every row) until hat measures 5" from beginning of work. Decreasing for crown: (switch to DP needles when necessary) Row 1: \*K6, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 2: Knit (on this and all even numbered rows) Row 3: \*K5, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 5: Knit across all stitches Row 7: \*K4, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 9: \*K3, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 11: \*K2, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 13: \*K1, K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 15: \*K2tog\* repeat to end of row Row 16: Knit across. Break yarn leaving a tail for securing. Run yarn through remaining stitches and pull tight to secure. Weave in ends. Earflap 1: (Will be knit back and forth - can use straight or circular needles) Pick up and knit 16 sts between 1st and 2nd markers. (Remove markers after picking up stitches.) K10 rows in garter st. Earflap 2:
