My Fair Hand Designs: Little Green Elf Cowl Pattern by Susan Goodwin - Knitting Project for DK Weight Wool Yarn

LITTLE GREEN ELF COWL A fun impish little neck decoration “My Fair Hand Designs" by Susan Goodwin

This cowl starts out with a favourite old traditional lace edging pattern. It is worked from end to end, then joined in the round with the rest of the cowl worked up from there. Tuck inside your coat or wear outside in full view ! I used : Approx. 130 yards of DK weight wool yarn (or slightly over half of a 100g ball) 4mm or 4.5mm 14 inch circular needle, whichever gives you a gauge of 16-18 sts/ 4 inches in stockingstitch. Gauge is not absolutely crucial with this. The finished circumference of mine was about 19 inches. This can be worked on straight needles, but I find it easier to work back and forth on a circular, which you will need later anyway. CO 12 sts, leaving 8" tail to finish seam later. Set-up row: Knit Row 1: Sl1, kl, yo, k2tog, yo, k8. (13 sts) Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10: Knit Row 3: Sl1, kl, yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k8. .(14 sts) Row 5: Sl1, k1, (yo, k2tog) 2 times, yo, k8. (15 sts) Row 7: Sl1, k1, yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k2tog, yo, k8. (16 sts) Row 9: Sl1, k1, (yo, k2tog) 3 times, yo, k8. .(17 sts) Row 11: Sl1, k1, yo, k2tog, k1, (yo, k2tog) 2 times, yo, k8...(18 sts) Row 12: BO 6 sts, k11. .(12 sts) Repeat rows 1 to 12 thirteen times so you now have 14 little points ( or more if you want a looser-fitting cowl ).. I found 14 to be about right for me. BUT... on Row 12 of your last repeat, bind off all stitches except the last one. From RS, pick up and knit 85 stitches from edge of lace. You will now have 86 stitches on your circular needle, counting the one you kept on from the edging. Place a marker (pm) and join to work in the round. IT'S EASY- PEASY FROM HERE ON.. Row 1: Purl Row 8: yo, k2tog all around Row 2: Knit Row 9: Knit Row 3: yo,k2tog all around Row 10: Purl Row 4: knit Rows 11 and 12: Knit Row 5: Purl Row 13: Purl Row 6: Decrease row: (k6, k2tog) Row 14: Knit 10 times, k6. Row 15: yo, k2tog all around (You now have 76 stitches on Row 16: Knit needle) Row 17: Purl Row 7: Knit Rows 18 and 19: Knit Bind off loosely. Weave in end. Use the tail from cast-on to seam the lace edging. No need to block this, but depending on the yarn you use, you may prefer to. Now the only things missing are your own pointy ears.
