Ropey Moss Cardigan Erry Pieters-Korteweg

Notes:
This cardigan I made for the first birthday of the son of my dear friends. I just made it by head based on the stitch pattern of some socks I'm designing. This stitch pattern is based on a Scottish basic gansey pattern. Cables with moss stitches in between. I made this cardigan by knitting the back at first, then the front panels TAAT and then the band all around the front panels and the neck of the back panel. And finally I knitted the sleeves, being a sock knitter, in the round starting in the armholes. I wanted to put in some pockets in the front but I was already past the place to do that, as this is not such a huge cardigan. I made the cuff extra long in order to have a proper sleeve cover. As I wanted the cables in the middle of the front panels and in the middle of the sleeves, your gauge is important to know.
Material:
DPN needle size 4 and 5 mm I used 200 grams of Katia Oxford, a thick yarn with tweedy flecks. 50 Grams is 125 meters. 3buttons
Gauge:
Stitch pattern 8st in Moss st and one CL8 = 4 cm and 5 cm. Moss stitch: 16 st. and 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

Size:
This cardigan is knitted for a boy size 74 but can easily be adapted to other sizes accordingly to your gauge and measures.
Stitch pattern:
The stitch pattern has a repeat of 16 stitches. 8 St. in Moss stitch and a cable over 8 st. (CL8). Each pattern repeat goes over 8 rows. Rows 4 till 11 are one p Chart is presented at the end. Row 1: <(K1,P1) 4x, K8> repeat till end Row 2: <(P1,P1) 4x, K8> repeat till end Row 3: <(K1,P1) 4x, CL8> repeat till end Row 4: =row 2 Row 5: =row 1 Row 6: =row 2 Row 7: =row 1 Row 8: =row 2 Row 9: =row 1 Row 10: =row 2 Row 11: =row 3
Rows 48-49: Work even in est pattern.
Cast on 3x16 and 2 edge stitches= 50 st. Knit 10 rows K2, P2. Then continue in stitch pattern. Make the first cable crossing in the 3rd row. After 9 cable crossings put all stitches on a separate needle on hold.
Right Front Panel
Cast on 25 st. Knit 10 rows K2, P2. Then continue in stitch pattern. Make the first cable crossing in the 3rd row. Start the decreases for the neck after five cable crossings until you have 9 stitches left. Knit 1 and decrease 1 stitch at the beginning of the needle. After 4 rows, decrease 2 st. After 4 rows, decrease 2 st. After 2 rows decrease 1 st. (3 times) 8 St. decreased, 17 st. remain.
Left Front Panel
Knit as the right front panel, but then decrease the stitches in the purled row. Weave the remaining 17 stitches of the front panels to the corresponding 17 stitches of the back panel. That leaves 16 stitches unknitted.
Neckband
Pick up an even number of stitches on the medial sides of the front panels and the remaining 16 stitches of the back panel. Start that 5" row with K2, then slip two stitches en pass the first over the second, then increase 2 stitches. I made three button holes in the medial side of the right panel, as the picture tells you. My friend forgave me my mistake. I should have done it in the left front panel. Knit row 6, 7 and 8 with K2,P2 ribbing. Then cast of in the ribbing pattern. Sleeves: cast on 60 stitches in the armhole with needles 5 mm. Knit in the round and decrease the second and the stitch before the last one in every fourth round until 28 stitches remain. Knit in a slight variation of the stitch pattern while decreasing. The 8 stitches in the middle are reserved for the cable and all the other stitches are knitted as moss stitches. Then continue with needles 4 mm. in ribbing (K2, P2) for 20 rounds or as long as you want your sleeve cover to be. Cast off in ribbing. Make the other sleeve in the same way.
Finishing:
Weave in the ends. Sew on the buttons.
