TREES HAT
A hat featuring a Guernsey motif used on sweaters from Fife, as documented in Gladys Thompson's book Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys, & Arans, Dover Publishing, ISBN 0-486-22703-0, and a second, original motif. Designed by The Experimental Knitter.
MATERIALS
1 skein Aran-weight wool (model is Rowan Magpie in Moss; yarn is discontinued) US size 8 $(5.0\;\mathsf{m m})$ circular needles OR size to get gauge tapestryneedle
GAUGE:
18 sts/4" in St st unblocked
HAT
1) CO 96 sts with size 8 needle (use 2 needles if you need to, for a looser cast-on). I used the Channel Islands cast-on but use what you like. Mark beg of round. 2) Knit in 1x1 rib (K1, P1, repeat to end of round) for 8 rounds (about 1"). 3) Set up for chart pattern: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}3$ , P 13, repeat from \* to end of round. You will do the mock cable pattern in the K3 and alternated chart patterns in the P13 stitches. 4) Repeat set-up round for 9 more rounds (10 rounds total). Note: If you never intend to turn the cuff up, then begin the chart after working 2 or more rows of set-up round. 5) Start chart pattern. When chart is completed, continue as for set-up round until desired length. 6) Dec rounds: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}3$ tog, repeat from \* to end of round. This makes 1 st out of the 3 st mock cable motif, slanted in the same direction as the mock cable. Next round: Knit the K sts and purl the P sts as they face you. Next round: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\tau$ , P1, P2 tog, repeat from \*, ending on P1 at end of round. Repeat previous round until there are 18 sts left. 7) Break yarn, leaving about $6"$ to thread through tapestry needle. Pull yarn through live stitches, and secure. Block to fit.
Mock Cable (worked on the K3 between the P13 stitches)
Rows 1 and 2: K3.
Row 3: Skip 1st 2 sts (leaving them on left needle), knit next 2 stitches, then go back and K the skipped sts, slip all worked stitches to right needle—1 mock cable worked.
Note on Chart Il: Begin and end every RS with K, every WS row with P- these sts are not included on the chart (sorry about that).
