Willy Wonka and the chocolate Factory may very well be responsible for our addiction to hand painted sock yarn. The wilder the better. While having an addiction to hand painted sock yarn may not be a problem, finding great patterns to showcase it is. We are sure if you were lucky enough to find a golden ticket and you got the chance to look in Mr.wWonka's sock drawer...you would surely find a pair of socks like these! 1
Abbreviations...
k2tog: knit 2 stitches together p2tog: purl 2 stitches together PM: place marker RS: right side sl1: slip one stitch sm: slip marker ssk: slip a stitch as ifto knit, slip another stitch as ifto knit and knit both stitches together through the back loops sts: stitches WS: wrowg side \*\*: instructions are worked as a group as specified
Stripe Patterw...
5 rounds of ccB, 4 rounds of hand paint Patteru instructions.. With contrast colour ccA cast on 144 stitches using the basic knitted cast ou. Divide sts onto two weedles.Join to begiu working iu the round being careful not to twist the sts. Cuff... Work 2 sts together forthe entire first round so you end up with the desired wumber of sts for the sock (72).. Round 1: \*(k2tog) twice, (p2tog) twice; repeat from\* Round 2: \*k2, p2: repeat from\* Keep working round 2 for 35 rounds or until your cuff measures 3 inches. Cut yarn and changeto hand paint yarn to begin striping. Leg... Continue working in the round following the stripe pattern above 4 times or 36 rounds then work mc colour stripe once more for a total of 41 rounds. The colours are just carried up the side of the leg ofthe sock. Take care not pull the strand too tight otherwise the material will pucker and be less elastic. Cut mc yarn and prepare to join ccA for heel flap.

Heel Flap... The heel flap is worked over 36 sts. Turn work so you are working back along the sts you just worked. Row 1: (Ws) k3, purl to end Row 2: (rs) p3, \*sl1, k1; repeat from \* to last 3 sts, k3. Continue working rounds 1 and 2 until a for 32 more rounds. a total of 34 rows worked for heel fLap.
Turn Heel...
Row 1: sl1, pi8, p2tog, p1. Turu. Row 2: sl1, k3, ssk, k1. Turu. You will start to see a small gap between the worked and unworked sts. Row 3: sl1, p to within I st of gap, p2tog, p1. Turw. Row 4: sl1, k to within 1 st of gap, k2tog, k1, turn Rep rows 3 and 4 until all side sts are worked, ending with row 4. You will have 20 sts remaining. Break ccA.
Gusset...
Pick up 1& sts along the edge ofthe heel flap. Pick up 1 extra stitch at the top ofthe gusset to

help close the gap,. PM, slip 18 sts from instep weedle to current needle. Using the needle with with iustep sts, PM, pick up 1 stitch at the top of the gusset to help close the gap. Pick up 18 sts along side of heel flap. Slip 10 heel sts t0 current needle. Each weedle wow holds 47 sts. Please note that the beginning ofthe round will now be along the centre of the foot. Start gusset with ccB. Close the top of the Gusset... Knit to 2 sts before marker ssk ,sm, knit to next marker, sm, k2tog knit to end.
Gusset Decrease...
Round 1: knit to 3 sts before marker, sm, e2tog, k1, knit to next marker, sm, k1 ssk, knit to end of round. Round 2: knit Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until F2 total sts remain. Foot... Continue working striping pattern until foot is 3 inches short of total desired length. End with mc stripe. Cut mc and join ccA. Continue working in the round for another 10 rounds. Toe Setup... We are wow going to redistribute the stitches. Knit 18 sts from the front weedle to the back needle. This is the new beginning ofthe round. Knit the 18 remaining stitches ou the front weedle. Knit 18 sts from the back needle to the front weedle. Knit to the end ofthe back weedle. Now all the instep stitches are ow one weedle and the sole stitches are on the other. This will make decreasing for the toe much easier.

Toe... Round 1: \*e1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts on needle, k2tog, k1; repeat from\* for second needle. Round 2: knit Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until you have half ofthe original sts of your sock (36). Then work round 1 every round until you have 10 sts remaining on each needle. Graft sts using the kitchener st. Sew in ends and repeat..
