Santa Beanie
Origins of this design
The concept for this pattern was to have a themed hat to wear indoors at a Christmas craft fair where it would be quite warm. A thick snug hat may not be suitable and a traditionally shaped Santa hat with the floppy triangular shape might be irritating flopping around for several hours at the craft fair. This is the result which is quite loose fitting. You may alter it (which is quite easy) by using different hook sizes and/or different yarn. This pattern uses US crochet terminology. Skill level - advanced beginner

Supplies
5mm and 7mm crochet hooks (see notes at the end about alternatives). Suggested yarn: Caron Simply Soft in red and white, and a white eyelash yarn. It is suggested you select a different white yarn for the pompom that doesn't have the shiny properties of Caron Simply Soft. Most similar weight yarns would also be suitable. Scissors. Yarn needle. Pompom maker or way of making a pompom.

Hook sizes and changing the size of your hat
This pattern suggests hook sizes 5mm (for the white edge) and 7mm for the main red section. This will give a loose fitting adult sized hat and give a slightly tighter edge to fit the head well. There are various ways to make changes to the size of the hat. For instance, following this pattern but using a smaller hook will make the hat smaller. Making more rounds in the “crown" section (the increase rounds) will make the hat bigger. You may wish to experiment with a combination of a different hook size with a different number of rounds in the crown section but ensure you have an even number of rounds in the crown section for the pattern to work correctly. There are various online charts which show you the measurements needed to make hats for different sized heads. There is a hat sizing chart on my website - www.24caratcrochet.co.uk.
