a Brownie Knits design brownieknits.com www.ginakanouse.blogspot.com User Level: Intermediate

Delphia is a plaid cowl knit in a tube to provide a fully finished look to both sides of the garment. The stranding work is knitted in the round and charted instructions are provided in the pattern. Because of the construction of Delphia, it is effectively 4 layers thick to provide extra warmth during those cold months of winter, but it still remains soft and comfortable. The stylish plaid cowl is the perfect accessory to keep you warm, cozy, and looking classy!

All sts are worked in the round in St st (i.e., k all sts). Be sure to work UP the chart from round 1, which means you need to start from the LAST page of the chart and work UP the rounds. Also remember that each round repeats sts 1-46 twice within a round. Delphia is knitted in a tube and the beginning and ending rounds are connected using the Kitchener stitch. This process creates a seamless join and requires that you use a provisional cast on. The crochet provisional cast on is recommended. With the crochet hook and scrap yarn, loosely ch 94 sts. Cut the end and pull it through the last st. (Note that you ch 2 sts more than you cast on. This gives you space at the beginning and end of the ch to leave 1 stitch empty. This allows for a little extra room for you to work.) With color C and one of the circular needles, pick up 92 sts through the back bumps of the crocheted ch, placing a marker after 46 sts. (This set up round is round 1 of the chart.) Place your second marker after the 92 sts and join work into the round as you work round 2 of the chart. Continue working in St st until you have completed all 163 rounds of the chart. (Note that chart rounds are read from right to left.)
Finishing:
After working round 163 of the chart, cut colors A and B leaving a 6-inch tail. Cut color C leaving a very long tail that you will use to Kitchener the beginning and end. Weave in the tails for colors A and B and all of your beginning set up round tails.

Pick up these live sts Unzip and remove the scrap yarn. With your extra circular needle, carefully unzip the crocheted provisional cast on and place the live sts on the extra needle. Place your long color C tail on a tapestry needle.

Holding the two circular needles with live sts together (one with the purl side facing you and one with the knit side facing you), perform the Kitchener stitch until all of your sts are bound off. When working the Kitchener stitch, be sure that the pattern lines up on both needles. For example, make sure your vertical red line gets bound off with the sts matching the same vertical red line. Pull the remaining tail to the inside of your cowl and back out of the work. Trim the tail being careful not to cut your work.

Blocking cures a multitude of knitting issues, not the least of which is unevenness during stranded work. Although the yarn recommended in this pattern is machine washable, it is suggested that the first time you wash/block your Delphia cowl that you soak it in water and wool wash. This will allow you to then flatten out the cowl to dry. You can pull and arrange the work until any looseness or puckering is evened out. For the best styling, place the joining round section as the middle of the inside of the cowl. This way, any jog that might be showing where you changed rounds will be hidden.
