District l2 (Hunger Games) Armwarmers By Bethany McRae

District 12 is cold, and coated with coal dust from the mines. The people are hungry and poor, and only the resourceful survive. If Katniss were here, I think she'd approve of the versatility of these fingerless mitts/armwarmers/sleeveswithout-a-sweater. Pull'em down over your fingers for warmth, push 'em up for climbing trees. Wear them scrunched or long, with the “arrow" in the palm of your hand or along the side of your forearm, it's totally up to you. Just don't knit them too bright...you don't want to attract the attention of The Capitol.
Materials:
Approximately2o0yardsofworsted-weightwool Size U.S. 7 (4.5mm) needles for however you like to knit in the round - there's no shaping in these, so I knit mine two-at-time. You can use DPN's, a long circ, whatever works for you 4 stitch markers (optional) silver embroidery floss (optional) wool needle, scissors...ok, you're smart, you can figure out the rest...
Abbreviations:
k = knit ·p = purl RT = right twist LT = left twist A word about sizing and gauge: I knit these at a gauge of 20 stitches to 4 inches; they fit my 7-inch hands and are nicely snug around my upper arms. If youwanttomakeyourslargeroradjustthepattern to work in a different yarn weight, go for it. Just keep your total stitches in multiples of 2 so the ribbing fits. Using needles of choice, cast on 34 stitches and join. Work k1, p1 ribbing until the mitt measures one inch from cast-on edge. Set-up for charts: k3, pm, k11, pm, k to end of round. Complete the Arrow chart once, then repeat row 25 of the chart until you're ready to knit the arrowhead. (l put the arrowhead right below my elbow. You can put it wherever you want.)

Resume k1, p1 ribbing and continue until cuff is as long as you'd like. Cast off loosely, and go Catch Fire! Optional: Using silver embroidery floss, duplicate stitch over arrow details. Keep stitches loose & stretchy!
