

Rose Trellis Beret
Intro: The Rose Trellis Beret was designed with the multi-craftual in mind. The beret can be knit plain or embellished with a bit of embroidery and a small crocheted center rose. The addition of store-bought satin rosettes completes the delicate look. Finished Sizes : To fit head circumference 20 - 22" (50 - 56 cm) Yarn Knit Picks, Bare Stroll sock yarn (75% superwash merino/ 25%nylon; 462 yards/100 gram hank): Natural, 1 skein or 250 yds. of any fingering weight yarn that yields the correct gauge. Needles US needle size 1 (2.50 mm): double points or circular and US needle size 3 (3.25 mm): double points or circular. Note: This piece is worked in the round so either double points or magic loop method is acceptable. You may need to switch to double pointed needles as the circumference of the hat is reduced. Abbreviations:
K = knit Kfb = knit in front and back of stitch P = purl K2tog= Knit two together (decrease stitch) Yo = Yarnover P2tog = Purl two together (decrease stitch) Ns = no stitch Ssk= Slip, slip knit (decrease stitch) Sk2p = Slip, knit two together, pass over the slipped stitch Cl2 = Cable left 2 (slip two stitches to cable needle and hold in front, knit two, then knit two stitches from the cable needle) Cr2 = Cable right 2 (slip two stitches to a cable needle and hold in back, knit two, then knit two stitches from the cable needle) Headband: With US size 1 (2.50mm) needles, CO 144 sts. Being careful not to twist the cast on stitches, join in the round and place a marker denoting the beginning of the round. Work k1, p1 rib for 12 rows or until piece measures 1 1". Change to US size 3 (3.25 mm) needles and increase as follows: (K2, kfb, k3, kfb) repeat 18 times, (k2, kfb) 6 times. Stitch count = 186. Work one row of plain knit stitches.

Row 1: (K3, sk2p, k3, p1) Repeat 6 times. Stitch count: 48 Row 2: (K7, p1) Repeat 6 times. Row 3: (Ssk, k3, k2tog, p1) Repeat 6 times. Stitch count: 36 Row 4: (K1, sk2p, k1, p1) Repeat 6 times. Stitch count: 24 Row 5: (K2, ssk) Repeat 6 times. Stitch count: 18 Row 6: (K2tog) Repeat 9 times. Stitch count: 9 Cut the yarn, leaving a 12” tail. Thread the yarn through all 9 loops and pulltight; fasten off. Weave in ends. Wet block. Note: the leaf pattern is meant to be puffed out in a bas-relief way so do not overblock the leaf motif.

Ch= chain Sc = single crochet Dc = double crochet Hdc = half double crochet Tr = triple crochet :.25mm) crochet hook and pink DMC size 5 cotton, ch 4. Join to form a circl Round 2: Ch1; sc in the next stitch. (Ch3; skip the next stitch and sc in the following stitch ) Repeat 3 more times ending with a ch 3 and slip stitch at the beginning of the round. The ch 3 stitches have made 5 loops around the center. These 5 loops will become the center flower petals. Round 3: In the next chain 3 loop, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) do this 5 times around; end with a slip stitch at the beginning of the round. Round 4: For the last outer row of petals, place your hook in the row below the center flower petals. Working on the back of the rose, you will be crocheting into the skipped stitches of round one. (Ch 3, sc in the stitch between petals on round one) Repeat 4 times. End with ch 3 and slip stitch at the beginning of the round. Round 5: Outer petals— In the next chain 3 loop, (sc, 3 dc, 1 tr, 3 dc, sc) Repeat 5 times. End by joining with a slip stitch to the beginning of the round. Tie off and cut the yarn but leave a 12" tail for sewing the rose in place. Leaf (make 3): With green DMC size 5 cotton, chain 8. Row 1: Sc in 2"d stitch from hook, then hdc in next stitch, dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, dc in next stitch, hdc in the next stitch & 2 sc in last stitch. Turn the leaf 90 degrees and begin working on the opposite side of the chain stitch. Row 2: Working along the back edge of the leaf, sc in the first st, hdc in the next st, dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in one stitch, dc in the next st, hdc in the next stitch, and end with sc in the last stitch. Secure the leaf to the underside of the rose with a slip stitch. Cut the yarn but leave a 12" tail for tacking the leaf in place. Sew the large crocheted rose to the center of the beret. Finish by embroidering a stem using the outline stitch and small leaves using the lazy daisy stitch. Sew on satin rosettes. (See photographs for placement) You can add as many rosettes and stems/vines as you wish.
